Default Tires are covered many times, but pricing always changes...

So with that said, I'm hunting around right now for a set or 2 of some Azenis 615's. They also have 2 different ratings for these particular tires. H and Z. These are going on a 15x7 rim (slips or my kosei's) So I'm looking for 205/50/15's at the moment, unless I can be provided with info on another size like a 215/45 or something. Basically looking for recent pricing or deals going on. These will be for track use only. Input appreciated.

Is a 225/50/15 out of the question for you?

I'd suspect that once you reach a certain level of driving, that you'd be comfortable stepping up to R compounds..... presuming of course that is an option in your class.....

http://www.edgeracing.com had some very competitive pricing when I was shopping recently... I'd say check there.

(*I have no affiliation or vested interest in the above website however.....)

Ken, 225's are not out of the question, though right now I have no need to get some wider one's. I need to work on the driver more before I go changing to many things. I currently have the 215's on my car, and since I can't find any more of those I figured I'd up it to the 615's.

94rs-turbo, I appreciate the offer, but I'd like all to be the same tire/compound.

I had them last season (RT615's) in 205/50/15's. I got them from Discount Tire for $90 per tire. M&B was free (good to have a friend in the tire business ).

Yeah, after more searching, discount has them for 109 but I did find one site that still has the 215's in stock. VR rated for like $65 a tire.

Check your pm's f00! I'd like to buy a set of the old 215 azenis today!

With the ats 4.9 final drive, I thought you would be interested in some 225's...!

I'd definitely suggest you only buy tires you are going to burn up in the next couple of events. Since you built this race car, it'd be a shame not to get race tires..... Furthermore, I wouldn't be surprised to see you step up to 225's or wider in R compounds very shortly..... 225/45/15 is now offered by toyo in the RA's... Hoosier does too in the R6!

Ken,

FYI, Toyo does make a 225/45/15 now. That said, they still don't compare to the Kumho V710, much less the Hoosier.

Ken, why do you say with the 4.9 go with 225's? I understand it will affect the gear ratio, but how much? Where's Ken (nsxtasy) with his gear ratio calulator?

In any given size, you can only get one speed rating. The only H rated one is the 14" size (195/60-14). All the ones for 15" wheels and larger are Z rated.

Yeah, thanks Ken. After reading that I looked at the size. Now what about the VR rated 215's that the other place has in stock?

You can also get decent prices on the Azenis from Vulcan.

The 4.928 FD is about 12 percent shorter than the stock 4.4 FD, which is a lot greater difference than the differences in the tire sizes. The 205/50-15 size is 1.6 percent smaller than stock (which is like having gearing that is 1.6 percent shorter) and the 225/50-15 size is 1.8 percent larger than stock (which is like having gearing that is 1.8 percent taller). I think the point he was making is that, if you're getting larger tires that are like taller gearing, you may want to offset them with a shorter FD... but again, you're talking about a huge gearing difference with the FD, and a relatively minor one with the tire sizes.

The gear ratio spreadsheet is here. I didn't originate it; I think it's from Trey. He said something about it also residing on itrca.com but I can never find it there. < shrug >

I don't think you're giving up anything by getting the RT-615 rather than the old RT-215. Neither does Grassroots Motorsports.

I agree with others that, if you are getting tires ONLY for track use, you may as well get R comps rather than the Azenis. I'm using the Toyo RA-1 in 205/50-15 and I love 'em. (Although, to be honest, there are an awful lot of excellent track tires on the market these days, and most of them are available in 205/50-15.)

Thanks for the Vulcan link. Looks like I'll be getting them from there. Reason I'm not going on R comps at the moment is this is a whole new setup. I don't even have an aftermarket sussy on it yet either, though I am in the process of having my sponser get me a set. I think for now I'll get the 615's, and wear through those. I'll eventually get the R's, but for now it's just a set of tires to burn through. Once I start dialing in the car I'll move over to R comps.
