Ok well im working on purchasing my first car... an eg YAY!! its in decent shape.. but it has a salvage title... i never had a car before, so im unsure about what exactly a salvage title does / mean.. i knwo it means the cars been "totalled" and sent ot he junkyard.. and i knwo it cuts the value by like 35%.. any advice..

Thanks ALOT

Find out exactly what's wrong with it, frame damage, I wouldn't buy it. But if it was stolen and it would cost too much to reconstruct then buy it.

Salvage title = Stay away.

You don't want to inherit somebody else's problems.

Keep shopping, there are too many EG's out there to settle.

naw, ur completely wrong

You have ot inspect every inch of the car, find out why it was totalled out, how bad the hit was, what happend in the accident, for me, I just take it over to a bodyshop I know who's got a lazer frame machine (told me my dad's jetta frame was 0.3cm (3mm) off, but it wasn't affecting tread or mpg or anythign, but ya never know)...

You really have to watch your step or as dickless above said, you could be inheriting somebody elses problem VERY easily, you g2 dig deep, history, accidents, owners, the whole 9...

Also, find out who put it back together, that's probably teh most important thing, if the guy put it back together in his back yard next to the family pool...it might not be that great a job, but if a pro shop did it, then it's prolly worth it, find out who put it back together, see if they remember it, see what they have to say about it

I'm not gonna lie to you, but a salvage can be a great buy, or a major problem, you really have to know what you're doing when investigating, but you already bought the car, so it doesn't really matter...., just don't dump tons of money into it if it turns out to be a **** job putting it back together...I made that mistake a few times

stolen recoveries tend to be great cars....cars with frame damage is a no-no....

also salvage titles diminish the value of the vehicle...if your ever going to sell it.

Here is my take on salvage titles. I purchase a salvage EM1 due to THEFT. Was complete strip but restore to perfect condition. The only thing is, some Insurance company will not cover salvage title. And some will charge EXTRA due to the fact its salvage. Personally a THEFT recovery is okay in my book. But anything that involves accident is a big MAJOR NO NO! Never buy a car that is salvage due to accident. I bought my EM1 for 6.5 grand at 52K miles which is a great buy. The motor is not an issue but anything that has to do with the frame I wouldn't mess with. Just my 2 cents.

Don't buy a salvage title car if you plan to sell it down the road. No matter what you do to a salvaged car, it will not be worth much $ ever again. If its a project car that you plan to keep for a while and don't care if you get anything back out of it, just make sure the frame is good, and you can get a hell of a deal. Look for all the small details though, a small frame tweak can cause huge headaches.

if you can get it from a reputable person i say go for it, there is a guy here in town that buys salvage hondas, fixes them if they are messed up, and then resells them, my girlfriend and her sister (twins) both had 95 civics from him, when we sold my girls car it was still in good condition and that was last year, and her sister is still driving hers, had it for over 6 years now without a hitch outside normal maintinence

yeah i have a 93 coupe that has a salvage title now

the women at the title place down here in texas explain to me why insurence companies are totaling cars out that are in near perfect condition
she told me and a few other places told me eco boxes like ours are being savaged cuase they basiclly dont want to pay for cars under 95 unless its some expensive luxury car like lexus or bmw . i got in a wreck and all it did was knock my back bumper off lol that changed my title to salvage just for that becuase the car has previeous damage she said its just easier for them to total it and instead of putting it in the shop to fix it but that was two ago and i never have a problem with it

iono about the mexico thing, but I've bought cars from the auction (well my boss has, I never have personally) and rebuilt them to top condition and sold them, when fixing them you just g2 makes ure you're not ******* the people when you sell it....but that's something that differs from dealer to dealer, we're not really a dealership of used cars as much as a garage....but hey, they give u an extra couple G's here and there...

NEver ever ever buy a slavage car from a person who buys them and sell's them. They buy from auction fix in mexcio and bring to u.s. make a good profit. See if the guy has other vehicles for sale. Take it to the freeway push it all the way. Let go of the sterring wheel and see if it puts to one side. then you got frame damage. That's my my little advice. But take your time looking at the car please don't be a dumbass like me and just test drive and then buy it. But slavage cars are sometimes bragian. it all depends on who fixed the car and who it got slavaged.</TD></TR></TABLE>

not necessarily, drifting to one side could also be alignment, which has nothing to do with structural damage

i have a salvage title car and its cleaner than clean title cars. it doesnt matter, if you know the history of it and you know how to inspect it, then get it if its coo. the most importent is just drive it see if it pulls(steering) and if the body lines are straight and the frame is still straight

I am sure each state has different laws about salvage titel vehicles. Hell, some states don't have 'salvage titles'. I just picked up a 97 hatch from a local yard. Body was in great shape, no rust, looked like it had hit a deer. The only real damage was the bumper and the core support along with some other minor miscellaneous items. I paid $1600 for the car and I have like $2200 total into it right now and in my area I am almost positive I could sell it for a little over $4k. We are also in the process of repairing an 03 EX 5spd. It was hit in the right front. There was some suspension damage which was replaced before we even picked up the car. We figure by the time we fix it and sell it, we will be able to make $2k - $3k on it and it will sell for about $3k- $4k less than what they are going for on Autotrader in our area. Air bags are a big cost factor when a car is wrecked. You can figure the cost of a shop to replace 2 (or more) bags and the windshield (in most cases) and any control modules that might need replaced, they would easily charge $1500 to $2500 or more. I did not replace the airbags in my hatch, I don't like them. It's all personal preference, but buying a salvage vehicle is not always bad and those that think so are just not in the know.

I bought my stolen car back from the Insurance company, so it will be Salvage title, and I have no problem with that.
I have a 2000 Si that I'm still working on, but it will also be Salvage. I don't plan to sell either, so it should never be a problem.

That doesn't mean anything, i bought a 94 ex red 2 door coupe EG, and it was two halfs of a car, but their was no record of it on the history of the vin# by anyone and the title was normal, not totalled or salvage or anything!. I got ripped bad on that deal a year ago, it was a nice car but the frame was coming apart and from the front to the firewall was where someone got some buds i guess to jerry rig weld the front half on in place of the old front that must have been smashed bad, the vin # was missin in the front too and not the right one.

no your insurance rate will not be affected based upon whether it's a salvage title or not
