from what i've read, the 97-01 crv's (first gen) would be able to tow a small bike, and overall are good for what they are, a car that has a livable ride height with nice interior space. personally, i get 20-23 mpg on my 97 crv, half highway and half city. known problems include: "thump/bump" noise coming from the front suspension (usually attributed to worn bushings, or shocks). also, the rear diff makes noise when you are turning with the wheel turned all the way to the left or right. it also apparently has a valve and fuel injector problems at higher mileage and needs the valves to be adjusted every 30k. sounds like a lot of work, but its not too bad. most of the stuff you could do in a day. i like the crv for what it is, but did wish it had more power.

i don't know much about the 2nd gen crv, but i hear they get better mileage and tow a little bit less. i think there are less issues though with the motor.

The second generation CR-V's are great. They have a lot more power and have very little problems (more like none). The 4wd system is the same as the old ones, The gas mileage is about the same too.

I really hope you didn't use gear oil or another type of differential oil. Not to undermine your intelligence i just want to be sure...

Anything thicker than the Honda Dual Pump fluid will DESTROY that diff. Just be sure it's compatible.
Just like putting gear oil in a Honda manual tranny.
