how much did u pay to have your timing belt done?
my 90k tune up is coming up, i can get an OEM timing belt kit for $100 but i need someone to install/tune it. how much would u pay ?
Just goto any local shop and ask how much they charge for a timing belt job. There shouldn't be any "tuning" invlolved unless you jumped time, or the belt is baldy streched. I think its about 1-2 labor hours at any shop.

here's how my timing belt job went.
3 hrs taking every off of the motor needed.
6hrs trying to break loose the crank bolt
3 more hrs putting it back together
15 min at shop having them loosen the bolt for me
2.5 hrs later timing belt and water pump installed and working fine
My advise
Don't buy the harmonic balancer tool not from snap on not from moroso
Take it to a shop and have them break it loose.
Expenses
Timing belt, water pump and tensioner= 140
Antifreeze = 10
Snap on harmonic balancer tool = 60
Snap on 17mm impact driver socket =10
Having a shop break it loose for me =75
total = 295 ouch :-(
Only the tool to hold the crank still. My opinion take it to a shop and have them break loose your crank bolt.
Then have them put it on pretty tight, take it home and do it yourself. Once you do it, you'll know how to set you engine to TDC. And it's not that hard to do anyways, just be patient.

Do it yourself, as long as everything's ligned up, nothing should happen...but hey, sometimes it's just a lot more efficient to take it to a shop
.. which leads me to this one shop
My first car, my eclipse, I let my g/f take it down to atlantic city, car stopped running, my g/f called a tow truck, they picked it up, then they fucked it up two ways, first he burnt out teh tranny (GSX, it's AWD) when he decided to tow it, using a tow truck the back wheels were spinning, even t hough not in gear, the tranny has no lube, u can't tow a RWD or AWD car.....Anyways, so like that wasn't bad enough, I got him on the phone, I told him right there he's lucky if he didn't burn out the tranny - he did, he said he would pay for a new one - he did.. My g/f's crying, she don'tk now what the expletive is going on, this dumb expletive changes the timing belt (timing belt snapped) and doesn't align it right, says "see, it's running now" Now, i get a phone call, this time from him, about "it's not running rgiht with teh mitsubishi timing belt", so I finally lost it and got my friend and his flatbed, went downt o atlantic city, found my car, found my g/f, turns out, the dumb SOB, mis-aligned the timing belt, twisted all the valves, then he tried to tell me she fucked that up when she was driving it away from his garage while she didn't even make it 50 ft before the valves bent and the engine stalled/smoked. So we loaded the car up, he paid for a new tranny....we left, so the tranny replaced, head rebuilt, it's running again
*4 months later*
117 around a 35mph turn, went into a slide, jumped a ditch, bent the frame
about a month ago my friend hauled off the car to the recyclers, sold a lot of the interior parts that weren't rotted (the frame bend made the doors not close right so the seats were open)
And that is the death of my first car

just do everything yourself. just get the belt, water pump, torque wrench, and the crank holder. it should only take like 2 hours.....3 if its your first time. you can prolly get copies of the pages from the oem service manual from honda for free....that crank pully bolt will be the hardetst part.....but if you have the crank pully tool and a long breaker bar with a jack handle on the end its not that bad....good luck
get a helms and do it yourself. took me 1.5 hrs the first time, but only about 30-45 min now. The crank pulley bolt can be a bitch sometimes, but I've never come across one I can't break loose with a breaker bar.

I wouldnt say that, look at his list.
He had to buy all new tools which cost money so thats 70 bucks right there, then all his parts stuff (150) so if he didnt go to a shop to break it loose for him he would have saved 75 paying 220. Doesnt seem to bad to me, considering next time he does it itll only cost him 150.
My friend had one done and cost him 400 dollars.... except they didnt even change the waterpump :-X

the crank pulley is the hardest part.
I found i simple way to do this job alot easier.
I remove the starter
then remove one of the Clutch pressure plate bolts.
then use a screw driver ( good quality one so it wont break)
turn your crank pulley and thats all.
i did it myself in 10min.

i have no problem with removing every lil part i have too, although im curious about he belt. when i take off the old one, do i just slip on the new one? or does the motor have to be turned to TDC or set or anything like that?

theoretically you could just slide one off and the other on, but I wouldn't trust that. Its too easy for a cam gear or the crank to turn one tooth in the process, then you would have to do the entire thing over again. It doesn't take long to find tdc once you're at that point.

and how would one go about lineing up for TDC is it the arrows on the cam gear and the head that need to aligned? seems to me there should be more to it then that?

Grfeat write-up to do it for a Del Sol with a Z6. I'm doing mine this weekend with air tools. The main thing to watch out for is setting it to TDC when putting it back together...really easy to mess up there =P
