Default Newb Q's Regarding Oil Consumption

Newbie question here...how would you know the difference between actually burning oil (due to piston rings worn out) or running rich? Of course the mechanical issue can be various things but thought i'd ask anyway. TIA

will do a compression test and leakdown test on friday. though i'd ask since one of the mechanics indicated that i could be possibly be running rich. He described it as "you can tell your burning oil if when you start up/initial start up of the car black smoke comes out" and "you can tell your running lean when black smoke only comes out when you rev the engine at a higher rpms". Not the best answer but considered his suggestion. Also distributor might have not been recalibrated on timing so it also pose an issue. It seems black smoke only comes out at higher rpms and when i engage vtech.

blue smoke = burning oil
black smoke = burning rich
white smoke = burning coolant
