Default First Carbon Fiber project

I know its not Honda related, but i wanted to share my first overlay project.
The first time i did this it wouldnt fit because the thickness of the carbon fiber was too much. I was able to remove the fiber and try again. This time i trimed it before i resined it and it fit prettygood. i think its 8.5/10 overall. THe finish could be a little better but its ok i guess. If i ever have time i wanna make another . This was my first carbon fiber project and i learned soo much. The next one i do can be perfect. For those of you interested this took me about 10 hours. The sanding took the most time.

Very inventive using those clips to hold the material down. Did you dip them all in release to get them off after the resin cured? Looks good

nah i just used a razorblade and muscle to peel it off. It was pretty hard to do, but using spray mount lets it come off. If i would have held it on initially with resin i doint think it would have came off. Not sure on that.

Thanks everyone

noice, bimmer ftw, I think I also see m3 mirrors, what body style?
I'm assuming e36, But the doorhandles looked different,
I've never really been in an m3 of that style either though.

Very nice job with the cf too, really came out nice.

how did you coat the laminate on so that it didnt just drip down off the part that goes around the radio while it dries??

oh and what sanding process did you use??

nah they just came off when i pulled on them. I figured they were painted and the piece i did was sanded so it would work. I didnt even know they made release.<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by FlatBlackTeg &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">noice, bimmer ftw, I think I also see m3 mirrors, what body style?

around the radio???

THere were alot of drips. The dremel took care of those.
I sanded with 230-400-800-1000 then added clear coat.

thanks, Heres the general steps. Theres alot of trial and error inbetween. I just kinda learned as i did it but yeah, heres general steps. Sorry there not very detailed.
1. clean the console
2. cut the carbon fiber to size (Bigger than the piece you need just in case)
3. spray the console with spray mount
4. Wrap the console in carbon fiber.
5. Cut the holes out where the window switches go, hazard, OBC & sun glasses holder, and Shift boot go AFTER you wrap the outside of the piece
6. Apply resin sparingly for the first two coats. You have to let it get tacky before adding another coat.
7. (note the binder clips holding on the carbon fiber. Once the resin is added, sometimes the edges will lift. To correct this pinch binder clips in the spots that you need to hold down. When the resin dries, you can remove them)
8. After you resin the hell out of it and it is very thick. Dremel any drips off and any areas smooth that you need to.
8.5 Sand with 200 grit paper
9. Sand with 400 grit paper
10. Sand with 800 grit paper.
11. Sand with 1000 grit paper.
12. Wash with soap and water.
13. Test fit with spare pieces if possible, or take off existing pieces to test fit. (DO THIS)
14. Clear coat
15 install

That's a great idea, items bought, and places they came from,
along with that walkthrough up top

3m spray mount - 5 bucks - home depot
surfboard resin - 20 bucks- local surf shop or online somewhere( i dont know)
assorted sand paper (200-1000 grit) - 10 bucks-kragen
automotive clear coat- 5 bucks - kragen
carbon fiber- 30-45 dollars a yard- I dont know i got mine in classifieds on this website

I think thats it for materials.

I posted the steps that i did above. I dont know how to really right them more detailed. If anyone has any specific questions that i did not answer post them or PM me and ill try to help. Its not perfect at all, and if i were to do another i could do it much better. My advice is start with something easy. Not a center console lol

the switches lap over the edge of the carbon fiber. Places where i had to roll the edge i used the binder clips that are in the picture or the spray mount was enough to make it stick.

if you have a fiber glass shop around you more than likely they will have carbon fiber also in stock...... I know there are a few places online that you can order from I think one is carboncreations.com but there are more.
