Difference in Sch 40 Stainless Steel and 304L stainless???
Is a difference in between the Sch 40 Stainless Steel and 304L stainless...and which is better??? or does it not make that much of a difference thanks!
I believe wall thickness is the major difference, is that what your getting at? T304 is good for exhaust/DP's, and sch40 is best for exhaust manifolds. Sch40 is extremely strong and durable, it can take a lot of abuse. Some one else will either correct me, or add to what I just said. If you tell us what your trying to make, then we can recommend something to you.
304L is a type of stainless steel, other common types are 308, 316 and 308L or 316L for example. The L stands for "low carbon" basically it means that that type of stainless steel can be welded without becoming too brittle after the weld.
Sch 40 is a reference to the pipes thickness.
You could have a Sch 40 304L pipe, you could have a Sch 40 308L pipe, etc.
If you're welding it, and have a choice, get a stainless steel with an "L" on the end, either 304L or 308L or 316L to help you make strong welds. If you can't find the L stuff, don't worry too much.
If its a turbo manifold, probably better to use the thick stuff, like Sch 40, if its an NA mani, use 16 gague.
Hope that helps.
