Default B16 - Funny knocking noise I've never heard before

Alright... so a friend put this B16 in his hatch just the other day... he was told that the bearings were bad. Overall, it has this bad knocking through the lower RPM range (maybe 1500 - 4000) and goes away (or barely noticable) under full throttle. It doesn't do it at idle, but it does sound like rod knock.

However, at idle, we pulled the spark plug wire out of cylinder 1 and you can hear the knocking coming out. Put the plug back in and it goes away. Pull plug wire 2 out and don't hear anything. But there is a knocking that comes from the cylinder 1.

Right now the thing is rich by running a tuned GSR map and no O2 sensor. But this was a problem known to the previous owners of the motor. So not sure why it makes this noise.

Any thoughts?

Shaun
