try unknown trans, try to get 5th and reverse to shift right
The car is in pieces for other stuff so I decided to install the tranny I got from the boneyard. I had the trans apart to check the insides for damage and it looked fine and shifted fine. I just slapped it on to test, being lazy, because it seemed okoff the car.
Sitting in the car, with the shifter, you have to go too far right to get in to fifth it barely wants to go in and reverse wont go in at all.
I think when I put the casing back on I might have moved something around. I'm going to have it back off the car this evening and I am putting together a list of things to check.
I have another working transmission with a cracked bellhousing to use for parts.
comments appreciated

Update: I've got 5th going ok disasembling the transmission and putting it back together. But it seems like reverse won't engage unless I give the arm a little help raising the gear.
Any advice?

Solution:
After taking apart the transmission a few times its obvious that its pretty simple. You just have to put things on in the right order. Well, it turns out that the casing I was using was warped causing the problem.
Who knows where or why but as soon as I cracked open the (then working) transmission it allowed the bottom section to move or expand in some way that it would no longer shift right. This explains why it worked before I took it apart. Thats a junkyard item for you.
Hope this helps anyone.
