Polyurethane bumper paint chipping?!?!
heres the bumper...

You can probably see the problem, but when i got my car back from painting it was fine...then after a month or so the paint started to flake/chip off the the front bumper. The bumper is polyurethane and i have been told by a few ppl that before you paint polyurethane your suppose to put some kind of sealant or soemthing to that affect? Apparently he didnt do that and he didnt sand it down or anything (i dont know if your supose to or not)
Does anyone know what you are suppose to put on the polyurethane to keep it from flaking/chipping paint and/or can someone tell me the process?
thanks.

dont u have to use sum kind of special primer? like bendable stuff. cuz if u were to hit a curb or sumthing all ur paint would chip right off. my bro is gettin a poly urethane lip kit put on his 97 Z28 and the shop was sayin stuff about the primer n what they were gona do to it.
i got my crx painted like 7 months ago, ur gona have the typical flake n chip here n there from daily driving. but urs is pretty bad. u better talk to the shop that did ur paint jus make sure u do ur homework n find out the process for painting poly urethane parts. goodluck

Yes you do. What it does is open up the pores in the urethane and remove some of the oils in it. This allows the primer to get into all the little bits of the bumper on a microscopic level and almost get absorbed by the bumper. This primer is also flexable which will minimise if not eliminate the chipping of the paint when going through temperature changes or from normal driving. It looks to me that they used a non urethane specific primer and that is why it looks like that.

the paint job was done by a single guy...and he did do a shitty job on all of it, but the worst part is the bumper. he didnt even primer it. he just sprayed it.
do you have any idea what primer to use...any name brands or certian kind so i can let the next shop who paints it know?
thank you.

here's the thing... whoever painted your bumper, did a bad careless job with it.
Because a lot of shops down here would do the samething and could careless.
What i usually do, since my car's black
i'd sand it down, primer it black. Still had chips but it was black =P

my brother owns a body shop, he does alot of kits in this area. he cleans all the parts with a chemical called TSP, it removes all the oils from the molds. then he goes over them withe a gold scotchbrite pad and another product called Scuff Stuff. then he putes a light coat of Bulldog plastic primer on them, and finally a coat of PPG urathene primer w/ flex agent added. then you paint it.
