Default Question about thin headgaskets, CR, JRSC and HP. Some technical stuff..

Ok, This is probably gonna get deleted, but damnit, I can't seem to get any help and I know there are some knowledgeable guys in the Accord forum. This is a damn "Technical" website and if the questions not dealin w/a freakin intake or exhaust, it's hard to get help.

. Just apply this to an Accord (it's relevant since it is dealing w/headgaskets, hp, CR and reliability) so please, don't lock it.
Just read.

First off, I have either a blown headgasket or a cracked head. I don't know which it is but I"ll be finding out soon.

I'm just tryin to think ahead here so I know what to do.
Basically, since I'm gonna be replacing the headgasket, I figured I'd look into a thinner one to raise the CR.
From this link http://www.bojangs.com/calculator/ , I came up w/a 10.44 CR for my stock GSR using a 1 layer gasket (did I do that right??)

So, my first question:
What is this worth as far as HP?

I don't think it was in any of Team Integra's threads in the article section.

Also, I understand that I'll have to buy cam gears and get it timed to make full use of my higher CR.

2nd and 3rd questions:
Next year is the year for performance in my car, and I'm goin w/a JRSC setup.

Would it be wise to go w/a thinner headgasket if in my future lies a SC thats gonan raise my CR when I'm under boost?
Would a thicker headgasket be ideal so as to have a lil more protection from it blowing?

4th question:
I've been around old school hot rodding all my life, and whenever an engine was built, the heads were ported and polished using a dremel.

Would it be smarter for me to just do a gasket matching/smoothing out the ridges port job or take it somewhere and have them do it?
I know having someone else do it would be best, but obviously that would be more expensive and I don''t have that kinda $$$ now, and since I woudl already have the head off, it woudl be convienient.

Basically, I don't wanna end up hurting my performance in the long run.

5th and final question and probably the more noobish one.

I know when you start changing things such as the airflow, CR and whatnot, that it's most beneficial to upgrade the ECU and have it dyno tuned.

Say I did use a 1 layer headgasket/cam gears/DIY head porting, would that necessitate say Hondata and dyno time?

I plan on using Hondata S200 when I do my JRSC stuff.

And just to let you know about where I want power, I'd rather have low-mid, useable daily hp/tq than uber high, bragging rights peak dyno #'s.

I also understand to make the full use of higher CR and head porting I need upgraded header/cat/exhaust,ect: But I don't an extra grand to drop into a complete system at the moment, so I'll just have to get by with what I've got (stock stuff)

I've done a good bit of research and I searched here and didn't find what I was looking for. Hopefully my questions aren't too stupid :S
Thanks for any help and sorry for the long post and please..
Don't lock this!! I need some info so I know which direction to go.

sounds about right. horsepower, it's not worth a whole lot. a couple of ponies maybe.

NO THAT IS A BAD IDEA. Higher CR = greater chance of detonation with boost, less margin of error in tuning.

YES! lower CR + boost = better margin of error, less chance of detonation

it wouldn't hurt to DIY, provided you don't take off too much material or leave sharp edges which will interrupt airflow.

Of course a pro job is a better idea but is also $$$.

NO it will not require a standalone, your stock ECU should be fine. You would want to get on a dyno to tune your cam gears however.

Hope this helps. My recommendation, provided you ARE going to boost it, is to definitely get a thicker HG to lower your CR some, as a stock GSR has a pretty high CR already for boost. I'd try the DIY porting if you feel confident about it. Good luck with your project! -B
