10w-30, 10w-40 or Honda MTF for my 94gsr tranny?
I have a 94gsr and the owner's manual suggest using 10w-30 or 10w-40 for the transmission.
Those with the 94-95, which weight oil do you use? 10w-30 or 10w-40? Which one will give a smoother shift?
Also, how about Honda MTF? Is that ok to use on a 94gsr tranny?

get the honda **** motor oil isnt made for a tranny
As far as I know, no significant changes occured b/t 1997 and 1998 Teg trannies.
Yeah, I'm sticking with 10w-30 or 10w-40. I know the newer gsr come with Honda MTF fluid stock but my 94GSR right now shifts really smooth........however, it's time for a MT Fluid change. I just want to know which weight oil to use so I can get the best possible shift/smooth shift.
I just checked my Helms manual and it does say SAE 10w-30 or 10w-40. I always heard that motor oil doesn't belong in a transmission, but I wonder....... Will my 1994 tranny shift better if I change my transmission fluid from Honda MTF to 10w-30 or 10w-40 motor oil?

You are NOT supposed to use motor oil in the tranny. You ARE however supposed to use a lubricant that conforms to 10w30 specs. 75w90 is NOT the right stuff, it's too thick and will probably mess up your tranny over time. I suggest using either Honda MTF or Redline MTL (conforms to 10w30 specs). Do not use Redline MT90, that confroms to 75w90 specs.
Use Honda MTF. People who put in synthetic either have the experience of it shifting really well, or it blowing up their tranny (probably because it's not exactly 10W30 spec). Don't take that risk!

How many Qts of Honda MTF do our trannies take exactly? I think it's 2.5-3 if I remember correctly? I can't find the owner's manual right now. The wife has shoved it somewhere and I 'll probably never find it.
I have 3 qts (that I bought for my older Civic and never used it) and want to get to replace it this weekend. Is 3 enough? Is it also ok if this MTF has been sitting in the garage for 1yr?

Use the Honda MTF. Not worth ruining your tranny
is just 4.43 Q. if you get it at the dealer

you'll end up using 2 1/2............
thanks Demieone!
BTW, I paid $3.50/qt last year from http://www.hparts.com but I ordered lots of other stuff too so I didn't get killed in shipping. It's worth buying as much as you can so the shipping doesn't kill the good prices you get ordering on-line.. I ordered 10 oil filters, plugs, etc + the 3qts of MTF and shipping was under $10. I still saved $15+

A mechanic i know at the Honda dealer near me told me to save my money and just use the 10w30..........
Once again, you should NOT use motor oil in your transmission. I recommend either Honda MTF or Redline MTL (not MT90).

He was probably hoping your tranny would go south eventually and that you would bring it in there for them to replace it.
