Default Speedo just doesn't want to work!

ok finished a sohc vtec zc swap into my 4door dx civic....after all things my speedo doesn't work...so we check the speed sensor cable and find out we messed it up when we took it off before the swap even started(we pulled the metal piece on the rubber out and couldn't get it to slide back on so the cable wouldn't come out on top at the dash) no problem! i run off to the junkyard and ****** out another one and run home and put it in....i make sure the cable is out all the way at the dash and spins before i put it in the speedo...and it still doesn't read! i even made sure the cable didn't get pushed back into the rubber by clamping the rubber down with a plier and pushing it in....so i have searched and narrowed it down to my speedo but does anyone else have any other ideas on what else it could be? i do not understand how my speedo can just break when i haven't even touched it? i also read that it could be a fuse and i checked all of them from what i know.... and if it is the speedo how can i fix this without replacing the whole cluster?

check the clip that holds the cable on to the gear, it might be stretched out.
