Default b16 tranny on a ls

what kind of improvments should i see in 1/4 and 1/8 times by swapping from the stock b18a cable trans to a s1 jdmb16 trans??? i havent had the chance to run this car yet. I normally hate these type of questions as much as the next guy, but im curious as to if its worth the hassle of swapping trannys? heres my setup...

1990 crx si (full interior)
13" steelies
b18a w/ i/h/e

im not asking what my times would be, im wondering how much the b16 tranny should improve my 1/8 mile, and how much it will hurt me on the highway, thanks...

some say that the b18 with b16 tranny will beat a b16 with b16 tranny... the s1 tranny is geared very short as you probably already know. maybe you could put in the ls 5th gear...

It makes a big difference if you dont mind 4k rpm cruising on the highway. it definitely feels alot quicker but i dont know how much it will improve your times.

No, I don't think you are being too optimistic. It makes a big difference.

I'll look it up when I get home and see what kind of improvements were made, I know its a big difference.

The powerbands between those 2 motors is way different..Im sure putting the b16 tranny will make you feel like you're going faster but you're probably not..Ls motor makes its peak tq at what 5000revs? So whats the point of having the b16 tranny..?

Um, wouldn't that be ideal for a b16 transmission? A peak torque that high. The short-geared B16 transmission keeps the rev higher after you shift, keeping you in a better powerband than with the LS transmission.

Its known that shorter gears = faster acceleration.

Maybe I'm wrong?

i dont know if you have a b18a but i know my car pulls the hardest around 4500 and keeps pullin around 6200 so i would say makes a big difference in keepin it in the powerband

well, i shuold add my goal with this engine is 160whp stock block, so the head will get worked and im going to use crower 403's if i can get away with it, so the engine will not be using stock redline for long hopefully...

Yeah shorter gears and higher final drive = faster acceleration..It just seems to me that the ls tranny is perfect for the ls motor,,and the b16 tranny is perfect for any dohc vtec engine..

Yea, they were made like that for a reason...

Honestly, personally, if I could go back in time, instead of getting my Z6, i would have gotten a b18b1 with a LSD cable b16 transmission. And I have to the potential to go LS/VTEC and/or turbo If i want more power later on. But thats just me. Everyone has their own opinion and I respect yours.

dont put a ls fifth gear in it unless your motor is DOHC VTEC. leave it and go race someone with a b16 and you will see that you will get into fifth when they're just going into 4th. it sucks ls hits the wall in 4th and fifth.
