1 drive last night and several conclusions.
Broke the R out of storage last night since it's in the 70's and I'll be autocrossing this Sunday. I needed to swap on tires do some pressures just basically go over everything and wash the bucket up.
I won't go on and say how amazing the car is to drive after the winter without it because I DD a 97 GMC Yukon that steers with the vagueness of an oceanliner, stops like a runaway freight train and has the general build quality of something just shy of Eastern Block technology. But I digress. It's big, has lotsa torque, has 4WD and can tow the R with a full load and the AC cranked to Antartic Fahrenheits. Suffice to say it serves more than one purpose but doesn't do anything blindingly well, especially provide anything close to acceptable gas mileage.
As an aside I got excited a few fuel fill ups ago when I achieved a stellar 14.5 mpg
At any rate I took the R for an evening drive. A mixture of back roads, towns, and some parkway to see how everything felt. Basically now, this car isn't fun for me unless it's in the 6K and above zone which ironically I noticed broke just about every speed limit posted where I was driving, as well as potentially more and other point adding moving violations. So slow down I did. Follow lazily I did. And ******* BORING IT WAS!
Conclusion #1 - Sorry I just hate driving this car on the street at street speeds. It just doesn't do it for me anymore. 80 mph feels like the car is just waking up and is begging to be whipped like a redheaded step child who **** his pants.
So there I am kinda tooling around safely, legally and boringly. And I notice another thing. It's friggen Dark. I mean the headlights are awesome. Much more clear and intense light than is shed by my M'erican Tank that shoots beams from at least 4 feet higher. Same exact bulbs in both vehicles mind you. I'm sure the projector beams have a bunch to do with it, as well as the R's lenses are pristine while the trucks lenses are hazy and whatnot even though they've been polished and cleaned up. But for God's sake while I'm just driving the R and having fun at sub warp speeds, unless I know the road like the back of my hand it's kinda puzzeling that so many younger drivers can go tear-assing around in the dark when they can't see jack **** let alone a proper entry, apex or exit through a corner.
BTW, I noticed PLENTY of cars driving too fast in the dark. It just amazes me. And it's everyone, not just kids. Although there were loads of them out all racing about having fun in the warm weather. I'm not saying all of this because I'm better or don't speed. It's just scary every once in awhile when you make these observations and notice just how close to the edge and death so many people out there are in every day and night traffic. Which leads me to:
Conclusion #2 - No wonder why I see 50 foot strips of rubber crashing into bent guardrails and matted trees on the roads in the mornings when I commute. People drive too friggen fast in the darkness and just add the danger of speed to the challenge of not seeing enough in front of them. BAM! Go figure.
There I am taking the car home, on the last few country roads just putting along sorta cooling everything off even though I never got to the point of really heating everything up. And I realize I LOVE THIS FEELING! I love this car. If I could DD it again I would. If there was No question of theft, this car would be my ideal car to own and daily drive, commute, etc in. Well then there's weather but I already have 2 Dumbestic 4X4's so that isn't an issue. And the excuse some give as per harsh ride? Blagh. It's much more comfortable than the Yukon bouncing all over the place and much more precise and safe in ALL of it's handling aspects. Unless I'm lookin for some Euro competitor like a Bimmer, or Lexus or etc as my next mobile I think the feeling of the R is just dandy. And no I'm Not looking for a luxury car. But I am looking for a new DD that encompasses all that the R provides with less of a headache as per the theft thing and possibly something that could easily tackle the 4 seasons that is the super duper fun North East
Conclusion #3 - I NEED A FUN FRIGGEN CAR TO DAILY DRIVE AGAIN, the Yuk just ain't cuttin it!
And guess what? I own the R outright now. What a great feeling, but damned this car/speed addiction thing plus the warm weather has got me thinking and wishing and perusing for a new bucket. Going to the NYIAS in a few weeks will most likely cinch whatever deal I may be thinking of now as per current offerings.
H'mmm.

Agreed. Why do you think I've gotten so many tickets?

I'd suggest an RSX-S (closest to the R you can get in a new car, with far less theft hassles)or the MKV GTI. Both cars can be priced in the low 20's.
(i.e. why anyone pays $30K for a leather/nav/sirius GTI is beyond me, when $23K will get you all the performance=DSG & summer tires)
Don't judge the GTI til you go test drive one.

I'd suggest an '06 Civic Si. My friend and I went out the otherday with him driving his ITR and me driving my wife's Si. We both had a lot of fun, took some photos ( https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1578211 ). Everytime he went WOT so did I, and I just stayed glued to his bumper. Plus after all that driving I got 29 mpg
And you have something type S doesnt have, LSD

Thanks guys but I am absolutely NOT looking for suggestions for a new car, and Definitely NOT any of the cars you nice folks posted above for various reasons.
Just thought I'd share some thoughts and my quandry.

Just food for thought. If you're considering one of the AWD wondertwins (MR/STI)and gas mileage is a concern. Remember they suck down gas Escalade style, especially the Subie. (Premium fuel only too)
I do about 25K miles a year, so gas mileage is a big concern for me too.

Glad to see you still love the R Anton
Last night was the first night out for a lot of us in the Northeast. And all I have to say is gawd damn. Unfortunately I did not have my car out, but my friends did, and their friends did, etc. It was a giant car show until 2am. It was over the line many times throughout the night, which is fun at times, but dangerous as hell. Way too many people were acting stupid last night.
Might I suggest this. If you are anything like me Anton, you might want to keep your DD low key, low performance, low cost, low risk. My temptations to drive "spirited" in the R are hard as hell to hold back. If my DD was anything like it, I know I would be getting pulled over left and right. Not for driving like an *******, but probably for doing a good 10mph over the limit everywhere I went, and probably taking exit ramps like Daytona. Im thankful to have my 92 DX automatic bubbleback and its 90-something fwhp. But even THAT shitbox is fun to take on backroads and whip around a turn. With its shot suspension, it actually rotates! lol

Conclusion #1 You're getting old;
The older you get, the more you think about the consequences..Plus, you may want to get your eyes checked if you're putt-putting around in the dark because your blind-*** can't see
Conclusion #2 You're being hypocritical;
Just because you're getting older, i'm sure someone recently said the following about you on the road; "Jesus, did you see how fast that guy just took that corner?! He's gonna kill himself." Speeding is just like masturbation, the older you get, the more stupid it becomes. You control yourself. However, you still end up doing it from time to time. If you intended to obey all speed limits, why would you want another sporty DD?
Conclusion #3 GET TO TRACK SOON
You obviously love racing and you're jonesing to do it. You're sick of the SUV. and you're sick of obeying the speed-limits(for the most part), but you realize you can't afford to get reckless driving tickets either.
Conclusion #4 You should write for a car mag because you would give awesome reviews

By the sounds of it, you're not going to be happy in any other Honda, because no matter which one you pick, you're still not going to have any power until 6000 RPM.
Evo. Put a trailor hitch on it and tow the R with that
Trailblazer SS?

I know how you feel bro. I was driving around with the wifey today and thought to myself that I'm over daily driving something so loud and raw, yet no power down low. As I kept driving I went from thinking about selling it to going ahead w/my previous plans of supercharging the damn thing and just buying another daily driver. The new Lexus IS is calling my name.
