Default All-motor LS non-VTEC: 152.4whp/128.8wtq with i/h/c/e and 403s

I've recently realized how the amount of time I spend on H-T and the number of informative posts I've made are pretty far off. I've had this setup for a good 3 years or so and just thought I'd share it with you guys. Car is a '98 LS with 71k miles, daily driver and autocross beast - in SM unfortunately, but I manage to win regularly in local events.

'98 B18B 71k miles
Stock block
Crower 62403 cams
Stock valve springs/retainers
Stock redline
Stock ignition timing
AEM CAI for ITR (3")
USDM DC 4-2-1 2-pc header
Carsound 2.25" cat
Apex'i WS 2.36" catback
Hondata IM gasket
No P/S
Tuning: Skunk2 cam gears, B&M FPR, S-AFC V1 (yeah I know... but I don't want to switch to OBDI and it does the job well enough)
Always run 87 octane

Tranny:
LS w/4.40 FD, ITR LSD, 8.8lb flywheel, Exedy organic race clutch

Weight: 2353lbs w/o driver in auto-x trim and 1/4 tank, ~2480lbs full tank street trim

I don't have dragstrip times, but 3 years ago with a touch less power, stock LS tranny, and a little more weight, running 205/55/14 Nitto 555Rs I ran a 15.0 @ 90.4mph. Would be in the 14s easily now.

Dyno sheet: torque peak at 4200rpm and 85% of peak torque from 2100-redline

The car:

Good numbers for no Vee-AttacK.

I don't know what it is lately with all these people building the NA non-VTEC engines, but it's cool to be different I suppose.

Cheap
Good midrange torque
Cheap
87 octane, low insurance by having an LS (no emissions headaches of a swap either), less complicated
Cheap
Reliable as all hell... I beat the crap out of it, 4th auto-x season and it doesn't blow smoke, burn oil, anything.

I spent just over $2k on engine stuff, and that includes the i/h/c/e. Not a bad way to get H22-like torque and decent top end IMO.

I don't know about H22-like torque...

But yes, I can agree with you that it is cheap.

You can have great midrange with a properly-built LSVTEC or B20VTEC, too, though.

P.S. Nice name.

Haha well I meant a stock H22, which has 156lb/ft at the flywheel. 129wtq is very very close, and mine peaks lower and the curve is at least as flat. It's true you'll have good midrange with a LS/VTEC or B20/VTEC, but those work against the cost and reliability factor quite a bit. I got this car less than halfway through HS, and I'm still beating the crap out of it one quarter away from graduating from a 4-yr university. And by the looks of it, it will still be kicking when I have kids 10 years down the line... I can't see an LS/VTEC lasting that long if you're visiting 7500rpm++ in auto-x situations a couple times a month.

*shrug*

It's all in the build.

But anyway, good numbers nonetheless.
