Default Is the OEM navigation worth it?? Pics and opinions wanted!!

My lady and I took an 06 EX sedan for a test drive the other day. Fell in love ( I did, she loves it too) with the ride quality, space, dash layout, sunroof, EVERYTHING!! I'm coming from a 95 VX so I knew that was going to happen

We've already decided on a auto EX sedan. The dealer did not have any navigation models on the lot. I was told there is no service fees for updates (BIG plus) and that it's voice activated.

Couple questions I have about the navigation unit:

1) Can you ask for a location of a specific restaurant? i.e Wendy's

2) Does the navigation stop working if there is bad weather? (I heard the signal is satelite transmitted)

Just would like to here opinions on the unit. We plan to do a lot of traveling in our spare time. Pics of the unit in action would be great as well

1) if you typed in wendy's you'd get a million loacations lol
you can say FIND NEAREST FAST FOOD and than scroll till you find a wendy's

2) Nope, i've driven in some horrible storms with my TSX and Si and NOTHING ever disrupted the GPS signal ( except being in NYC or atlantic city) clear days
just alot of errors in those areas lol

Can't go wrong with the OEM unit AND Your insurance goes down

There are no service fee's HOWEVER u can get updated discs for new locations etc etc

but when u buy the car trick them into giving you 2 years of navi updates free or something comparible in price

I was told from the salesman there are no updates since everything is done through satelite. Basically the satelite info is updated which is where your signal is pulled from

Updates are done through Honda? Is it with discs? Any idea how much an update cost? I asked the salesman about this because I don't want to deal with any subscriptions or updates that are going to cost an arm / leg Damn, if I was lied to I'm going to let him know when I return

Thanks for the info and pic

it costs 185.00 for every new disc, and you do the update yourself. all you do is place the new dvd in the drive, and it updates itself, you then take the old disc and sell it on ebay

I love the fact that you can control the radio with it, also. It's a fun unit to play with, and it can get pretty indepth once you learn the in's and out's.

I think he means adding an external amplifier for a subwoofer.

I asked in the audio forum after I started this thread: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1577188

We want a automatic for the "going out" / "traveling" vehicle

Otherwise would really consider the Si sedan

Ok. So i put a downpayment on a NBP Si w/ navi thats coming in in July.

Can someone explain more fully what kind of stereo options I have with the navi? I dont even care about a sub really, but I've always had amp'd aftermarket speakers in my cars. Ill be able to do that with the navi in?

You can also modify the navi unit to be a video monitor, you just need any external video source (thinking of Video iPod at the moment) but any cheapo DVD player will work, you just need to hook up the audio from your source to the aux input jack which I believe the Navi headunit has, and as far as the video goes, you just wire up a switch that interrupts the video feed from the navi unit, to the headunit. Just flip a switch, and your main screen switches to whatever your external video source is feeding it. Search around google for navigation video modifications. Many stereo shops do this as well.

you CANNOT do this with the OEM navigation for the new civic

its an ALL IN ONE UNIT
not external like TL , TSX etc etc

So being that it is not an external navi unit, you cannot still tap into the video line and splice a switch into it? I guess you've done all the research already then, so nevermind! As far as I know, as long as you can find the video line, whether it be internal or external, you can interrupt it and display whatever you choose to, on it.

there is no "wire" and internally everything is tied in

somethings missing another part won't work

its like a layer cake.... if u disconnect one part the entire unit disables

I know that OEM is always a much "cleaner" look...but for anyone interested: FYI you can pick up an Alpine or Pioneer Navi unit (with touch screen and all the amenities) for about half the cost. Personally, I preferred non-Navi b/c of the fact that I would have had to wait another month for my car had I chose Navi, you can always get the OEM Navi installed after-the-fact, and b/c I wanted to spend the extra $2K+ on bolt-ons. Ultimately, it's all a matter of personal preference.

I just bought the clarion N.I.C.E 7" gps. I would like to mount it below the stock stero in the cubby hole. The antena on the nice system in mounted on the back of the moniter and would be block underneith the dash. I would just like to know if it would still pick up satilite signals like that? Thanks.

Has anyone actually done the OEM Navi retrofit? I've got the standard head unit with the XM module, how hard is it going to be to add in the Navi?

The honda part/service guys here say the wiring harness is different and there's no way to mount the antenna. Also, has anyone doing the retro fit also modified the stock steering wheel mount controls. You can get the antenna and the steering wheel controls from Honda, but I don't know if the standard (I've got an EX sedan) can be converted over? Any help would be fantastic.
