PREMIUM GAS????? middle or regular???
whats up guys..i was just wondering what gas everyone is useing and what i should be useing. i mean it says to use premium in the honda si brochure.. let me know what you guys think
High compression engines require premium fuel to prevent pre-ignition (aka "pinging" or "knocking"). The Si can run on regular unleaded, since the ECM can adjust the spark timing and whatnot to compensate for 87-89 octane, but you won't get the same performance.
Basically, if you're going to buy a car like the Civic Si, then accept the fact that you need premium. It costs a whopping 20 cents more per gallon. If you buy 15 gallons of gas, that's $3. So, on days when you have to fill up, just skip the latte at Starbucks, and your expenses will balance out nicely.

If you don't plan on tracking it and are only using the car as a daily driver to work and back regular gas is okay while the weather is cold.
I have noticed that there is a slight drop in fuel economy (but still it's still worth it in terms of miles/dollar) and a very small increase in idle roughness.
I will switch to middle and then premium as the weather becomes warmer.

Its not consider dumb to not use 91. It is only smarter to use 91 octane. When you have higher octane the combustion is more accurate. If your vehicle compression is is say..... 8:2:1 91 octane isn't necessary. But if your compression reads 10:0:1 then 91 is a smarter way to go.

Like other people said.. run premium. Yes you can probably get away with running regular, but I wouldn't count on the cpu to detect the ping all the time. Knock sensors are not perfect. I would bare minimum run mid-grade.

This is the equivalent to people putting premium in their cars when they're designed to take regular. The "advantage" to putting in 101 is your wallet gets lighter fatser, and that's about it. The disadvantage being your car could actually lose a little power.

like its freaking epensive to put premium in your car
premium is usually .20 cents more x 12 gallons and its a 2.40
you can afford an Si but not 2.40 extra per fill up?

Thats one of my hang ups about looking into getting an SI. Do I want to pay that much for gas? Gas is bound to become even more expensive, the SI doesnt get the greatest gasmilage of the civic lineup and I do alot of driving. But then again If I modify the car I have now, id be in the same boat probably.

lol try driving around in a prelude that used to get 18 mpg
and you have to put in premium (min 91 but we only have 93 in tx)
now at least i get 25 after a big tune up and some parts
gas is just one of those things where you can't neglect. i'm sure the SI can get good gas mileage (~28) its just usually the driver who needs to control himself and not ever use vtec, but then whats the point?

I get between 28-30 mpg in my 92 Prelude Si. I guess that's pretty good overall, but ya it kind of sucks having to put in premium. I'm quite content w/ the mileage and I'm not too heavy w/ my foot so I'm sure that helps. If I do mostly highway driving I can get close to an average of 30mpg for the tank.. If I do alot of city driving then I usually get an avg of 28mpg for the tank... not bad..

but jdm h22's with 345cc injectors instead of 240 cc on the h23, yeah i can't help but use more gas even though i don't drive her that hard
