reach inside the fender and you'll notice that there is a piece of trim that goes around the inside; thats your culprit.
Nobody ever cleans behind there or behind that strip and it collects dust and moisture and voila, rust.

that metal lip that he's talking about has a rubber trim peice on it. dirt and water get trapped in it and it never gets cleaned like he said and some idiots even take off the rubber thing and bend the lip up so the 17" wheels wont rub thus weakening it and also creating a pocket for dirt and leaves to sit in and just rott away....

Ya but thats just half the battle. It comes down to people maintaining and cleaning their car on a regular basis.

yea u either have to grind out all the rust and patch it in with bondo, or if its bad enough the whole lip and about an inch or more up on the fender can be cut off and a new one welded in its place.

i'm sure a lot of people will object to your bondo option, as it doesnt entirely work....
or like you mentioned...best option is to find a donor crx with good quarter panels, and just cut the metal out weld it in..and re paint...the only way to get rid of rust for good...but to come across a good donor car for parts is just as rare as finding a crx w/o rust to begin with

you dont need to get a donor crx, any quality body shop can do it, and as for the bondo i had rust on my 89 si on the left rear quarter panel, i used this stuff thats supposed to eat the rust and just washed it out, bondo'd the hole in and sanded it flat, flush and smooth with my car looks great and still is holding up awesome, just the red i used to touch it up didnt quite match as well.

i have a nice size cancer spot on my civic that i need to have taken care of it goes all the way through which pisses me off cause now i gotta see how much replaceing the whole section will be. ive heard it can be up to 2 gs
Allright Rob. Everytime you post pictures or mention your Civic or CRX Im going to post mine up. It will be a block to stop the whoring.

Back on topic yes that inner piece is was causes the rust back there. The water / salt gets caught there and then travels back to the end of the wheel well and stays there with no place to go other than in or out. Since the seal is most likely installed correctly it cant go out so it slowly eats away the inside untill it starts to rust through. Its a horrible thing that EF and EG owners have to deal with. IMO its worth it though because you get such a great car otherwise.

Depends on where you live. If you live in areas with salt or sand it would be best to do so. The sand will rub back and forth in there exposing metal and water will cause it to rust. The salt will just eat away at it. If you live in Cali or a place like that it shouldnt be a problem.

There's also a site that sells the rear wheelwell arches for 88-91 civic/crx. Covers basically past the point where the rust is commonly at on the rear wells. I have the link on my other computer. They're only $40 a piece and they're brand new metal. Better than dropping that much on whole qtr panels, unless the rust is everywhere
