Showing off the timing belt?
This is probably a stupid question. I've seen alot of engine bay pics where people removed their timing belt covers to show off the pully. It really makes the engine bay look alot better, but I'm wondering how safe this is for daily use? Esp. in Canada (Toronto). Or is it not wise to do this at all (car show thing)?

This would certainly b e my biggest concern. That would REALLY suck if it happened to a GSR motor that you just put TONS of money into building it up.

I think a lot of people do it to help with clearance issues on the B series engine.

Yes, my good friend had a DOHC ZC and no timing cover and within 1 week a rock had taken a nice chunk out of the timing belt. Needless to say he got a cover real quick. People that leave them off are asking for trouble. There are a lot of different items that could get in there. If it is strickly to show off there adjustable cam gear(s) or underdrive pulleys then they should just hang them from their rear view mirrors and call it a day.

what clerance issues, it doesnt stick out further than the crank pully, and its not wider than the intake manifold or exhaust manifold

I think they just do it to show off their colorfull camgears..I dont see any other reason,,I would never take it off..Like said, that's asking for trouble.
yea if you need to adjust the cam gears just cut out your circles in the metal and plastic, if you should ever drop anything in there the lip on the cam gear should catch it, as the covers sit pretty close to the gears, and it would be hard for a rock to work its way into the covers threw the holes in the cam gears, and when there spinning at whatever rpm it would be even harder
i wouldnt run without them

I have no cover, upper or lower. When I was putting the motor back together, in the car, and on jackstands, it was a pain in the *** to get it back on (the lower cover anyway). When I took it off, the outer part was clean, and the inside was dirty as hell, there was so much grease and stuff down there the belt was making a little path through it! If you have all the splash guards and stuff, and you don't have loose **** in the bay, it shouldn't be a problem. And no, I don't have shiny gears to show off, just a stock A6. I've been running it that way for 8 months no problem.

yeah, i've been rocking no upper timing cover on my zc for 2 years, no problems. not showing anything off, I just can't find one(if anyone has one for sale hit me up). now that I said that I probably jinxed myself
Im showing mine off also. Not on purpose, but when I got my y8 head it did not come with the upper cover. I figure I will just have to change the timing belt in 20k.
