Default Help needed with installing the Mugen Gen2 wing.

I've searched and searched H-T. I only found one pic of what I am looking for, with the hatch lid closed.

The problem: I've got an authentic Mugen Gen 2 wing installed on my hatch lid, however, I'm unsure of how the brackets that mount to the underside of the pedastels (winglets, wing sides, etc.) are mounted to the hatch lid.

I assumed that the brackets mount loosely to the underside of the winglets, and sandwich the area of the hatchlid they 'touch'. Is this correct?

--OR--

Do I need to drill two more holes into the hatchlid to mount/use the brackets?

Please help...the only pic I found of those brackets mounted is with the hatchlid closed, and that hasn't helped.

Thanks in advance.

There should be no drilling necessary. The inserts on the bottom of the pillars line exactly with the factory holes on the hatch lid.

The plates are there as a secondary support structure and do infact sandwitch the pilars to the trunk lid.

Also, do not over tighten the bolts to the inserts on the pillars. They will strip/break.

When I install those brackets, how loose do I keep them? Even at only 2 threads in each screw, the bracket does NOT sandwich the hatch without scratching the paint. One thread doesn't do it, the screws holding the bracket fall out.

You happen to have pics on how yours is done?

Whoever posted up this thread. You deserve a cookie! I've been looking at those brackets and wondering what they were and how to install the damn wing for like 2 weeks now.

when I had my wing I was in the "who cares" stage and ended up scratching the paint on the inside of the trunk lid.

N1-R, whom I sold it to was smarter and applied small pieces of double sided tape with only one side of the adhesive removed. I've also seen it mounted with a thin piece of weather stripping (think foam around the exterior doors of your house).

This is used only as a CUSHION so it doesn't scratch the paint. You can then clamp those screws tight enough onto the car without worry that it will mess up in the inside of trunk lid.

i didnt apply those brackets on mine...no way was i going to scratch the paint. the 2 mounting screws are plenty in my opinion and i havent seen or noticed any detriment so far. if it bothers you that much to keep those outer brackets unused, than maybe you can line the inside where it will touch the paint with some thin felt or soft material. for me, the supplied double sided mounting tape and 2 screws were plenty.

I didn't want to bother the KMS crew with my trivial issues. Which is why I came to the ask for helpful insight of the ITR gang (or is it krew, squad, clan, pack, pride, etc?).

If Ausmith had/has time, I'm sure he'll chime in.

like others have said... yeah, the two factory holes should be sufficent to hold the wing up. tighten it too much and the fiberglass will crack...

whether or not you use the extra little metal tabs is up to you

I IM'd Clayton, so hopefully he responds with some instruction and some pics of his install.

**The more I look at this the more I am convinced that the only way to mount these brackets securely to sandwich the hatchlid into the middle of the bracket is by drilling two more holes for each pedastel.

BTW, I am determined to use all the pieces that came with this kit....must be some **** retentive quality in me.

Okay - Clayton here answering the question. I just installed mine so it's fresh in my head. If I have time I'll take pictures.

The black brackets get screwed to the fiberglass winglets using the self tapping screws. The gold bracket captures the black bracket from the side, goes around the edge of the hatch lid, and then the set screws are tightened. The set screw tip actually lands on the seam sealer on the bottom side of the hatch lid so it shouldn't really scratch up the paint at all. I tightened the set screws until there was about 1~2mm of "head" left on the bracket.

The brackets clear perfectly when the hatch lid is closed.

So I figured out my problem. No gold brackets. Damn. I'm going to have to go get a pair made. Clayton, any pics of what those gold brackets look like?

If not, don't bother. I'm sure I can mimic the black brackets, and just use a small diameter nut tacked onto the new bracket to set a screw.

Damn....that was easy enough had I had all the proper pieces in hand.
