okay i previously asked a question on the difficulty of changing one out. i asked a guy what all was related to the issue, whether or not my air conditioner ran in through it as well or not. he said no the ac would not be effected due to the heater core being bypassed or not, yet others say it would? it has been cold here so i can't really tell if the ac works or not, cause the fan will blow cold air from outside anyways? can anyone tell me what the deal is on this? and if so explain a tad on how it works, im just simply ignorant to how this works.

 

No, the heater core has nothing to do with the A/C. It's just a small radiator inside the dash that engine coolant flows through. Air passes through it and gets heated up, just like with the main radiator on the front of the car.

The A/C is very similar; it has a "radiator" (called an evaporator, I believe) which has refrigerant (R-134a) flowing through it instead of engine coolant. Air passes through it and transfers its heat to the refrigerant, and gets cold.

Since you can't have one "radiator" with both engine coolant and A/C refrigerant in it, there's two separate ones. If you disable one, it won't affect the other.

 

okay.. huh i guess this guy is just messing around with me, he told me the ac in the car worked, yet i cant get it to work, compressor is not locked up, fan blows, just nothing cold coming through, i checked all in the car for fuses, in main panel under hood, the 20a compressor fuse was blown, i checked it for a short, none, just simply blown fuse, replaced, and solved absolutely nothing, still have same prob, no cold air blowing. anyone have an idea what it can be? no coolant?
