Because he's doing I-CAR weld test plates. Pretty good. I'm asuming your using Lincoln SP-135 Plus at school. Now check with the level gauge that was handed to you for the length, width, height, and diameter; and do the destructive test to see if it's aplicable.
PS: You cant use GMAW for structural. Only SMAW or Flux-core for Structural welding.

I passed that crappy test. Now go weld some paper thin import sheet metal together using the same techniques, and see what happens. Welds look decent, you got a little impatient at the end of your butt with backing, probably good enough to pass though

how did he get impatient?

The last of the weld isnt as wide as the rest of the bead, meaning he didnt sit there and fill in the last second or two, but stopped a little early. They look great and would pass for anything most likely. Only suggestion I could give you would be turn the wire speed down just a LITTLE BIT...could be the pictures too, but it looks like they may be SLIGHTLY too much filler wire in there. Lookin great though!

Its a mig... You dont add filler will mig.
He could slow his wire speed
BTW your welds are very good for overhead!

Actually you do, just not manually.

motorsports welding and structural are diff ****. for race car looking welds try a C motion with a little whip hesitation. or do the dot-dot-dot thing. which is just welding spots on at a t ime. this gives you the stacked dime appearence, and lets things cool between dots so you dont blow through thin metal.
