Bumper swap
Can I put an 90-91 crx Si front bumper on a 88-89 CRx Si? I have the 88-89 front brace but really want the 90-91 front bumper cover. Do I need the 90-91 front brace or is it the foam inserts that makes them incompatible? I know the you can swap out the bumpers on the SI and HFs so I don't see why I couldn't do it like this? If anyone knows for sure please let me know as I am getting ready to place an order. thanks
Sorry new computer and didn't notice the clock was set wrong. But it was three hours off. I found some local guys who have like five CRXs between them and they said no problem except for the foam inserts but who needs the inserts anyway! Oh well I had already ordered the front brace for the 88-89 and now just ordered the 90-91 front bumper so we will see for sure. I will let you guys know how it goes. If anyone on here has any experience please jump in.
Ok so here it is; I should have bought the 90-91 front brace!
The problems I have run into are small but a pain none the less.
1. the bumper fits really tight and is a pain to get on. 4 of the five top screws go on ok but the fifth one takes some muscle to line up.
2. the bumper lights are longer on the 90-91 crx so the new (88-89) ones I bought won't fit but that's not a big deal.
3. the screw flap for the bumper lights hits the brace so I will have to pound on it with a hammer to get it make room for the flap to not be interfered with.
4. the center screw hole in the grill does not line up with the mounting hole on the brace but that's easy enough. Either don't use or cut it off the brace!
5. The flap that the OEM brace has for bumper screw holes to slide into needed to be spread apart for it to slide in but a phillips screw driver took care of that.
I tell you what though; the 90-91 OEM front bumper with a nice lip on it looks way better than any aftermarket bumper out there. I should have done this from the get go. Wel worth the pain I am going through.

good info. i ran into a similar situation on my 91 hatch. i'm in the process of returning it to stock and found a clean 91 front bumper cover and a straight 89 bumper support. i thought it didn't make a difference...i was wrong. essentially the same problem you are having plus the 88-89 bumper for the hatchback is about an inch and half shorter so that corresponding support is designed as such (and vice versa). good luck with you car bro!
Thank for the good luck wish. I am taking the new bumper and lip to the shop to get it molded and painted. I did find too that I have about an inch gap between the fenders and the bumper but I also have aftermarket Z3 fenders so I don't know if this is why? But it sure does look sweet when I finally got the bumper to fit!
