For some reason, the wires are almost cut..

i belive that is a coolant temp sensor

It's the coolant temp sensor for the gauge in the cluster. The insulation on those wires gets brittle with age and cracks off.

Thanks.. That was the answer I was looking for. Now with the connect like that, could it make the gauge read false readings?
