Loophole in getting jdm cars or parts
i was talking to my cousin who lives in jamaica. He has an evo 3, and is getting a civic type-r at a crazy deal. He might already have it, im not sure....but he was telling me that his local dealer/tech/car guru orders a complete civic type-r, and then chops it in half in japan, and ships it like that.
exactly what they mean by chopping it in half, i'm not sure of. but from what he told me is that, when its chopped, they ship it as parts and not as a full cars, and it costs tons less to do that. then his car tech puts the car back together, and sells it. i'm gonna talk to him soon about the details. He told me that its not illegal, but just a loophole is getting around paying the crazy import taxs.
i'm not a import/export expert, so tell me what u guys think about this....its been on my mind for a while now....

yeah he tells them, he told my cousin, thats how hes gets teh good prices....
yo, i really want to know what he actually meant by chopping the car in half. maybe he cuts the frame, doesn't sound like a great idea cause it'll never be the same again....
maybe its a clean cut. i dunno. its not that moronic, just a new idea of getting around taxes.

actually this is the way it works even in california, well atleast the import autowreck shop i go to does that. They ship containers of cars chopped in half from japan but they dont weld the halves back together. Instead, they strip the car of all the parts and sell them. Last container I saw them unload contained a civic type-r, integra type-r, and i think a accord type-r.
so i guess, i'm not the village idiot then....its not the craziest **** ever said....finally i got someone who has heard of this being done before.....people will do whatever for jdm ****....
and for places like jamaica where its right hand drive, this is probably done a whole lot. chop it, weld it back together, and sell that ****...

Yup, thats a nice way to bring a whole car.
thats what i did exactly with my motorcycle
2-stroke motorcycles are not allowed in canada, so what i did is part it out, put it in 10 boxes, send it by ship.
prob works the same with cars.... but... what about the frame??

thats the thing.....i'm positive it can be done, but is it a safe or good thing for the car....i don't see how it can be cut and be exactly the same it was before the cut.
any mechanics or body shop guys might be able to answer this question.

couldn't they just ship the shell (frame intact) as a "race only" item??? then reassemble here in the US? that might fly according to the laws.....I don't know about you, but I sure as **** wouldn't drive a car that was cut in two and then welded together...ESPECIALLY if I was going to drive it fast around a track
brian wong (b18c1_powered_si) told me that they do this all the time to import stuff from jdmland
I don't really think they weld them back together all that often, though... our cars all have unibodies (no frame)

welding the halves together is SHADY!! Some dude got into some major trouble for doing that! when you get the halves sent over its just an easier way to import jdm parts basically.
here's what you can do... get a car, rip out the engine... ship it over... take the rest of the car... ship that over seperately. now you put the engine back in and it should be good as new and you can drive without fear of the frame ripping apart! registration would have to be as a kit car, show car, or race car... but if you plan to register it as the latter two, then you can get the whole damn car, as is. Only problem is you get caught with it on the street, consider yourself screwed! As a kit car, you are able to drive it on the street for limited mileage, but most cops wont be like... oh i see you've gone more than so and so miles the month...

Cutting cars in half has been around for some time. The proper way to cut a unibody frame car in half is to cut half way up the winshield, straight down. This creates a "Front Clip". I know alot of body shops who do this, and if the car is assembled CORRECTLY, you won't have ANY problems, BUT if it's a chop job...WATCH OUT!
Bringing the car in under race specs is not worth it. You have the gov't looking down your throat.
Want the secret to importing a japanese car and driving it on the road? I know the REAL LOOPHOLE, but I ain't telling...and no, it wouldn't be titled as rebuildable, parts car, or Kit car. It would have a LEGIT US Title, using the VIN on the actual JDM car.
Got ya thinkin?
