Default transmission interchangeability, 01 into a 97?

hey guys i did a search but didnt find anything.
My friends 1997 auto prelude (base) tranny just died on him. Im looking for a replacement and all i can find is 00 -01 trannies. According to the parts guys they say 97 is different than the newer years, there is no interchange. However i have talked to other ppl and they say it should work.
So before dropping 1500 bux on a new tranny that might not work, can anyone help us out?
thanks in advance!

It'll work, but $1500 is waaay too much for a tranny. More than an a $1000 more.

yes a newer auto tranny will work just fine.

i hope 1500 isn't just for the transmission itself. it better include the labour involved. even so, its still a tad high. that was 1500CDN right?

hey thanks for the replies, that price is canadian funds.
i cant find one privately and he needs the car up and running.
I figure it should work too, but the part numbers are diff, and the dealerships say it wont work. So far no one has given me an answer with 100% certainty, and ive been seraching though so much material, its frustrating.
