The cylinder walls are ok on the inside, but the outside of the walls have chips..take a look at the pics. I don't have much experience guaging internal condition so any insight would be helpful.
Thanks

That's why you don't run tapwater for coolant. The white stuff is lime and mineral deposit from non-distilled water. You should be ok if you clean it all out. Is that what you are asking about or are there chips in the metal? What happened to that motor? The pistons are filthy!

no idea what happened to the motor...i suspect that at one time it was boosted and was flooded w/ fuel to make the cylinders look the way they do...but then again, i could be wrong since I don't know the history.
Good insight on tapwater as coolant.
The chips are on the top outside edge of the cylinder wall (you have to look closely to see them). Not sure what could cause this but wanted to see if it could be a problem down the road.

Tapwater used as coolant as previously stated, oil changed infrequently, engine looked to burning quite a bit of oil, decent sized ridge of the top of the cylinders. Any vertical scratches extending down the bore that you can catch with your fingernail?
any factory cross hatche left?
I broke down three single cams with over 100k on them and each one had at least Some cross hatch left.
Yeah looks like that engine ran damn rich.
Flush out those coolant pasages because if the water jackets are like that most of the passages will be like that.
Head looks iffy- not bad but not great!

Its hard looking at pictures to determine whether it was running rich or burning oil. That looks like oil to me.
Heres a quick test if you have access to compressed air. Take the camshaft out, turn the head upside down so the combustion chambers are facing up. Pour some liquid in each cylinder and and spray compressed air into the intake and exhaust ports to detect valve leakage. (be sure to have the spark plugs still installed so the liquid doesnt leak out there.)
Lots of tiny little bubbles, not unlike beverage carbonation, usually indicate a leakage due to carbon / gunk buildup on the valve. Large bubbles usually indicate a leak due to another problem, like a bent valve. Sometimes, youll have a leak so bad it will just run out its respective port.

Kinda looks like block gaurd to me. That aluminum stop leak crap people try to use when the have a blown head gasket. Might also be the same reason the pistons are black from burning leaked oil.
People that use this crap should be hit with a hammer. Oil stop leak is even worse. Found both in the Accord I bought for a beater. Took forever to clean the crap out.
