The proverbial "noise" from transmission...
I posted this on the Hybrid site and wanted to share with the folks over here as well.
Good morning all. Here is the setup:
1. GSR transmission
2. 4.785 FD
3. SS carrier bearings
4. ITR LSD
5. ACT clutch (Standard disc - not pucked)
6. ACT pressure plate
The issue I am having is a "thunking" noise that occurrs when the car is in motion. Under 2k RPM in 2nd gear, I can really hear the noise. It is rythmic. Thunk thunk thunk thunk.
As soon as I depress the clutch, the sound goes away. I have done the search and have read that some bearings in the case, input shaft, and throw out go out.
...edited portion start...
The force is telling me that it may be the throwout bearing. Once I depress the clutch the transmission is "free spinning" and I hear no "thunking" noise. That would tell me that the input shaft bearing is fine since the tranny is still in motion, just not connected to the engine.
...edited portion end...
Another data point would be that the sound is still present when turning left or right. So to me that would elimate CV joints.
Besides pulling out the bearing and inspecting them, what is the easiest way to verify that the bearing is still functional?
*UPDATE*
After pulling the transmission and cracking it open, I found that two teeth from the FD have lost their way and decided to leave the home on the FD. I checked the gearset for any other damage. Luckily, there is not damage to that. The inside of the case took a slight beating. I will need to sand it down a bit with my trusty dremel.
Thanks.

Here are the culprits in my situation.
The LSD assembly in the case.

The LSD assembly out of the case.

The missing teef.

The internal damage

My biggest question would be why would some teeth shear off the FD?
Where can I find just the 4.785 ring? I do not need the kit as my countershaft and 1 gear are fine.
