Default New guy needs help with project: B16, B18, etc

Hey guys (and gals)

I'm new here and new to building up Hondas. I'm used to working on jeeps, toyotas, and other rockcrawling rigs. I'm familier with engine building, tranny building, custom fab, interior work. I also have some racing expereince from when I used to Autocross a 95 Mustang GT. I've helped friends work on their civics, eclipses, scion Tcs, etc and now I'm working on one myself.

One of my friends is stationed in Japan for 4 years and before he left he bought a civic from one of our friends or $2K. It's a 1996, plain silver HB completely stock. My buddy wants me to build this thing up for racing, mainly road racing; but he also wants it to fly down the 1/4 mile. So he has given me a decent budget and wants me to build this thing up. I've read the FAQ section on engine swaps and I know I want to rebuild whatever I buy so it can handle some boost. My question is which motor has the best selection of parts (pistons, better rods, etc) for this application. I want the engine and tranny to be as "bolt-in" as possible. From what I've read the B16 and B18C1 are good choices although they seem to have high compression. There seems to be an endless amount of choices since I'm going to rebuild whatever motor I buy to lower the compression to handle boost. I want to put a turbo kit on this car and push 300+ HP. Give me some advise so I can get started on this project, what would be a good platform to start with.

Oh, and be nice to the newB

Here's a picture I found on eBay of a car just like the one I'm building up. My "blank canvas"

the b18c1 adores boost, eagle connecting rods and ARP rod bolts work well. upgrade the valvetrain at boost at 15 PSI and 300 should be close.

go with lsvtec, those have low compression...get a b16 complete swap and pick up an ls block (b18a/b) and then put the b16 head on the ls block and it will be g reat for turbo

the rod stroke sucks and i wouldent trust the lower capacity oil pump from the LS to supply the PR3 head with enough oil. JDM GSR with a sleeve = t3h w1n

The B18c1 is what I've been leaning towards, is the tranny a good match for a turbo and is it also an easy swap into this EK? I've read about people mixing and matching B16 trannys on B18 engines, etc and still not clear on what the better setups are.

Is the B18C1 swap any harder than a B16 swap?

I've read a lot about the ls/vtec as far as a them being good/powerful engines. What is that advantage of having a non v-tec 1.8 liter bottom end over a B18c1 which has the better Vtec bottom end?

lsvtec makes more power then a b18c1 and more torque

b16 tranny has shorter gears then the ls tranny which makes it better for drag racing

Your asked about b series trannies...
Well as far as gearing goes heres the break down
heres how it does from most aggressive to least
b18c5/b18c r > b16 > b18c1/b18c gsr > b18 ls > b20

Though the b16 tranny has slightly better gearing than a gsr trans I dont think it would be significant enough to matter if your going to boost it anyways. Also hers a web site for b series trans if you want to see some numbers...

The more I look at it the better a K20 swap is looking. More power and torque N/A plus the 6 speed tranny. It would be more money for the motor but I could put off the turbo, the K20s 200 hp would keep him happy for a while and later he can add the turbo to take it to 300 hp

What do you guys think?

If I had the money it'd be a k20 all the way. Kick *** NEW (ish) motor, 6 speed tranny and a LSD. Here's something else that pushes the k20 in your favor, Hybrid Racing is right accross the lake in Mandeville from you and they pretty much fabricate everything you need. Here's thier site: http://www.hybrid-racing.com/main.html

When they make thier kits to where I can have A/C *and* power steering without busting the bank, I'll start looking for K-Swap parts. It just get's too damn hot from March to November in the South.

OK that is a good starting car, well it all depends on what kind of racing you want to do, autocross is what I like more I would saying if I was you I would get a b20 block with a nicely ported b16 head making a b20/vtec motor and run some TWM TIB's will make good power and torque and will rev fast to keep you moving through turns, best bet is to use a really good header and exhaust, it will be a fast car and fun to drive every day and nice to play with some GT's hahahahah well nice for you not for them well good luck and hope everything works out just remember it all depends on what kind of racing you are going to be donin with the car just have fun doing it
