I used to have some projector foglights where the lens looked blue when the lights were off, but put out an intense amber light on the ground.

I disagree. The amber projector foglights on my old car looked really nice. The amber light was really bright. I like the way Lexus cars look w/ HID's and amber fogs, nice contrast.
