Question about registering my 49-state legal bike in CA
My '04 FJR1300 is a 49 state bike, if I move to CA, can I bring it with me? It has over 7500 miles, if that is important. I bought it brand new in Aug 03.
I am having a hard time understanding the CA DMV site. I can't tell if I can or can't bring the bike.
I also have an 03 ninja 250 (49 state legal also) with 2k miles. I would love to bring it along also, but not sure if thats possible?
I am assuming I'll have no trouble with my bone stock 2000 GSR also...should be legal.
here is the blurb on the DMV site

What is a nonresident vehicle?
A nonresident vehicle is one that was last registered outside the state of California (in another state, country, province, territory, etc.). Anyone who brings a vehicle into California or purchases a nonresident vehicle while in California should be aware of the registration requirements.
NOTE: California law prohibits importing and/or registering a new vehicle (one with less than 7,500 miles at the time of purchase) unless it meets or is exempt from California Emission standards. If you acquire a 49 state vehicle (vehicle manufactured for all states except California) from another state or country and do not qualify for one of the exemptions, you cannot register your vehicle and must immediately remove it from this state. </TD></TR></TABLE>
The FJR is really clean-running and meets strict Euro spec emissions, but it doesnt have the additional "stuff" a CA legal bike has...does it come down to the emissions test, or am i totally screwed or what? what about the lil ninja?

It needs to have 7500 miles, your FJR should be fine, the ninja I don't think so. You can alwasy swap out clusters... I don't think they actually put them under an actualy emissions test though.

i could definitely get the ninja to 7501 miles before i move...

When do you plan to come out here? Buy my house next month. I think I might be moving out of state

Bay area is crazy expensive. My suggestion would be to purchase a somewhat large home in Modesto (or some place similar) and commute on the FJR. A lot of bay area workers are living in Modesto, bringing up the overall wealth of the city. Of course, they've also brought the attention of thieves with their money.
What does the 250 do for you now?
Chris, where are you headed??

UT, NV, or AZ. They all suck, but they have good jobs out there. Whatever location it is, it will be close to a track

i'll probably rent a cracker box in san jose / santa clara until i figure out what i want to do. in that case, the 250 would be a better commuter bike if i live close to work. the FJR is a bit large to dive around cars, but will work. the 250 would be a blast splitting lanes. i'll need to rework the rear shock and forks, as its extremely softly sprung and very underdamped. just stiffer fork springs and heavier oil would make a tremendous impact.
as far as cost. I make good money now, if i make the same money plus the difference in cost of living, i'll be just fine in silicon valley. i think.

Dont worry about the mileage on the bikes. You should be able to get CA plates for both bikes without a hitch since you're moving into the state. It bypasses the emissions and mileage requirement for CA residents trying to buy a 49state bike

residents moving from out of state TO california are NOT required to have the 7500 miles on the scooter. Come on in... the water is fine.
