Default Long Distance Trips - anybody do them?

So this weekend im going to the NOPI event in Phoenix Arizona. Its a 370 mile drive from where i live in San Diego. I've been thinking about riding my motorcycle and not drive the car. Am i crazy? I've done 500 miles in a day on the back of my dads Gold Wing when i was a kid, but that was a gold wing.

Id take my 636. Id like not to put miles on the S2000, as i drive it enough already and im trying to keep the miles off it so i can actually get something for it when it comes time to sell.

on the 636 you will be stiff when you are done and your *** will be numb. i havent ridden great distance on a super sport but i know the bikes like the SV, Monster, Hornet ect, are a little easier to ride because of the fact you sit up a little more. but its all up to you.

ohh and stick some ipod ear buds in your helmet otherwise you will be bored on those straight *** roads.

You so crazy...

I ride the 750 up to Anaheim or Riverside from here(~100 miles) and I feel like a stiff board with a sore ***.

Good luck on the ride. Dont drink too much liquid and take frequent brakes.

Take your time traveling it.

I haven't taken any long trips yet but I am thinking about riding my bike to ontario in early may.

I only have the civic and bike and a car waiting in ontario for me so I don't want to have to rent a trailor to get it there if I end up going.

Where are you putting your traveling gear? I hate taking my minivan anywhere because it guzzles the gas, but in my old age, I'd rather be comfortable for the trip.

Make sure you stay HYDRATED. I'm not sure what the other person intended, but not drinking fluids is a sure way to suffer from heat exhaustion. Lots of water. Keep a shirt handy that you can douse in water if it's hot. You can also use a bandana and soak that in water for your head.

I have a tank bag i can put stuff in. Im only staying over night so i wont have too much to bring. Id stop three times for gas and drink. (I only get 140-150miles on a tank of gas)

I think i might be crazy too, but i like adventures.

I lay on the tank bag so i dont have to hold myself up the whole time..its normally not too bad.

A throttle rocker might help. A Corbin or Sargent seat works well to stave off butt burn.

i didnt mean dehydrate, but all I know is full bladder + long distance trips = pain.

Keep hydrated but not over hydrated.

Oh okay. Just wasn't sure. From my experience, drinking a full bottle of water is barely enough, especially if it's hot. Having to pee isn't bad - there are usually enough bushes on the side of the road.

I did a 1200 mile trip to Seattle last summer, it took me 2 days. Almost 10 years ago now, I went from Maine to SOVA (800 miles) in a day, I dont think I could pull that one off again. My knees really start to bother me after about 6 hours in the saddle.

But to answer your question, youre not crazy. It's very much doable. Just keep hydrated like stated above, and bring extra layers of clothing cause its very cool riding in the morning (you know this) and its very easy to get hypothermia on a bike. Bring chain lube with you too.

I've done a few 400 mile runs, and a pack load of 150 runs, maybe I can help.

Plan a lunch as a break. Also plan to stop every 100m or less, for 5 minutes or so (a water break at a rest stop will do).

This will sound odd, and probably doesn't matter for your location, but stay warm. Take it from Vin Diesel "Stay in the Light". The worst 2 trips I ever made, I was fine during the day, even hot. The sun dipped, and the heat just kept getting sucked out of me. Your hips will cramp, you'll shiver so bad you can't see straight. It gets to a point you just can't go on. Take extra clothes in a bag if you plan on making a sunset run. Plus, heat keeps you loose, increases reaction times, and reduces the risk of injury.

Wrap around sunglasses are good. You can crack the visor, flowing air across your face is reviving, air flowing in your eyes is annoying.

Shift positions a lot, with the dominant posistions being more upright (try to put the flow over the screen right on your chest).

I'll probably think of more later.

you can do 370 fairly easily on your scooter, for me the biggest issue is being bored while droning along, with bikes you can make the odd stop and side trips... exploring is the fun part. So if your plannign on blasting thru, it might be better in a cage. If you get caught in bad weather, nothing can be worse

What's the point of owning a decent car if you're not going to drive it out of fear of mileage?

S2000 would make a much better trip IMO.

Good info, I'm looking to do a few longer (300+ mile) trips this year myself.

So you buy a car but don't drive it as much as you'd like to so someone else can benefit and you get $500 more when you sell it? Just doesn't make sense to me.
