DA back brakes?
There is a cross pattern on the piston - looks like a giant philips head screw. You have to spin it clockwise to compress it and make room for fresh pads. They make a socket for this application to make it easier:

I have one, you can get them for about $9 from any car parts store. It helps. But you can spin it with a vice-grip or by using large pry bar like a screw driver if you dont have one.

if im not mistaken, 2 flathead screwdrivers will do the trick. or maybe im thinking of the front ones. try it, it worked for me. just put the point of the screwdriver into the + grooves, and push opposite ways, spinning the caliper.

why? the fact of the matter is, it gets the job done efficiently and with no problems.

Exactly. All you need to do is spin the damn piston anyways. Anything that can fit into the slots and allow you to turn it will work perfectly fine. That tool is just built to sell to idiots who think they "need" it. When you probably have a dozen other tools lying around that will do the job exactly the same and not spend any extra money.
