Check with your local DMV. Here in CA, you have to take a written test to get a permit. After that, you can take a riding test at the DMV to get your license.

the class is actually 50-100 depending on where you live and you get an insurance discount. if this is your first bike, you're going to need it.

And if this is your first bike, good luck staying alive

Youre insurance premeium is going to be a pretty penny. The MSF course will save you quite a bit of money. Also youre 19. Insurance is going to be high regardless might as well save some money. This isn't a flame the MSF course saves you money and shows you real-life situations you could avoid in the future.

Go to your dmv and get all the info you need about getting a permit. If its only a test, then take it. Then get yourself enrolled in the MSF course. Its the best way to learn how to ride, and learn to ride better if you already know how to. Then if your state recognizes the MSF as a license examiner, you can get your license through them.

So, to sum up. You can get plates by going to your local DMV and working that out with them. It's either that or your local DOL.
You can get a permit by taking a dumb written test at the DMV. In my state the permit allows you to ride any bike any time, except at night, and without a passenger.
To get your license you take a riding test, on your bike, at the DMV.
MSF is great because when you finish it, you take the test on their bikes, and you spend the whole time practicing for it. The insurance drop, development of good habits, and riding skills are reason enough to take MSF.

i rode around with just a permit. here in WA state the permit costs $15 if you pass the written test, and is free if you fail it. its good for up to 90 days.

Ride is a program by Progressive i believe. Your best bet is to shop around, as you will see some high prices, i.e. $500 month etc. But if you look around, you'll be able to find a decent price.

I, on the other hand, never had insurance as it was not required by law here in WA. I was planning on getting it, just didn't have the money at the time .. and guess what happened. Well, click the link in the sig. I t-boned a truck and it created quite a hairy situation. I also didn't have my license, and my permit was expired at the time which only made matters worse.

The ticket i recieved for no license was dropped in court, but thats besides the point

Doesn't really sound like you did any homework before you bought your bike.

As far as insurance, there is no "one" insurance company that is drastically cheaper than the others. It varies from location to location, depending on your age, driving record etc. A lot of individuals use USAA, Statefarm, Progressive etc. I would shop around for insurance (something I did not do and regret).

Goodluck and have fun

edit: Today is my 4 year H-t Anniversary !!

Dude your in the Army? The the MSF is free for you. Just gotta do it on a post that has it. Its manditory for all military personel to take anyway, so its not an option for you.

Guess that explains the grammer...jk

Here in IL you have to ride with someone that has had their liscense for over a year if you only have your permit.. and to obtain it you just have to take the written test which is about 20 q's. I never looked at the book and got a hundred percent.

As for insurance.. Id go through your parents.. Have yourself be the secondary driver, and get full coverage. Mine is only 500 a year for full coverage.

Biggest thing you can do is, Gear up and take things very slow..
