Monster 620 - yea or nay?
I have heard great things and awful things about these bikes.
Someone has one for sale locally, and it's sooo sexy. A little more than I wanted to spend, but very tempting.
Anyone got first-hand experience with one of these? It's not the "Dark" model - it's red. I'm assuming it handles well, and is slow. Although, I distinctly remember someone in here going pretty far in criticizing this bike. What are the major knocks on this machine?

It's old-tech, but it works. For someone trying to get into the Ducati "mystique," it's an inexpensive entry. The bike will not outperform any motorcycle in its class, let alone price-point. But that's not always the point to a motorcycle.
There is a HUGE aftermarket out there for the Monsters. Not to mention, the cult following (like the SV crowd).
I might be wrong, but I don't believe the Monsters (except the S2R/S4R) have the dry clutch. Not sure what the point of this last sentence was.

honestly ... i dont know much about em, so i probably shouldn't post lol. I rarely see em, but aesthetically, i'm definately not a fan of em. They seem to be the ugly step child of the Ducati family. they'd probably be pretty fun to ride though.
but to each his own, and it's better to ride then to not ride at all
sorry .. i'm sure my post didn't help you at all
good luck

don't do it.
get a 650 hawk or an Sv650; both more reliable and the sv is much faster. best buy is probably the hawk, slow, but still fast enough to get your thrills and when set up properly handles better than almost any bike out there. the little monster is the redheaded stepchild of motorcyles, if you locked her up for 30 years.

Are you sure? Have a look.

I think it's pure eurosexiness on wheels, but that's just me.

What you have to remember Ross is you're asking people who post on Honda-Tech and run around on Japanese bikes so most are going to be biased. You'd get a similar answer if you asked about an Audi or BMW sedan anywhere on this site... ask me how I know. Yay Japan!
You aren't going to keep the bike more than a year anyway so overall concensus won't matter much.

I've seen some pics of a red Monster with white stripes. I kinda like that one 'cause it's more playful, boy racerish. The dark is ubersexy. Plain red imo is sexy only with a chick on it

No first hand experiance with them, but a guy 2-3 blocks over has a red one and I think it looks pretty damn nice, sounds like a beast too. Not sure what pipes he has, I hear it more than I see it.
Ross, my choice would be the Monster, no doubt! It's kinda like the conversation we had at VIR about the NSX verses the Corvette. When you see a Corvette, it's like everyone else, another corvette. But when you see the NSX, it's like hell ya! Now get the Monster!

Yeah but Victor, the Monster 620 is more like a Fiero with a Lamborghini body kit, it may look the part, but it's slow as ***** and the parts aren't up to snuff. Performance Bike panned it in a test when it was against the Honda 599 and SV650. The ending photo of the article was them leaving the Monster behind and a guy riding bitch on the SV. It's basically the Ducati to say you have a Ducati

Hey Ross... the Monster is a very nice bike, shes gotten long in the tooth if you want to try and compare her with the latest generation nakeds, but the price will probably be a bit lower to. suspension can be helped if your looking for all out handling(that's not a hard to accomplish), but the major drawback is a lack of big power. Of course this is only a 620cc twin, so your not getting this for 150mph blasts. The frame/swingarm are very nice, well designed and laid out, and yes when new you were paying a bit for the ducati name, but now that we're years from new, that elevated value has been taken out of the equation. Personally, I like the monster allot, however the only one I would probably own would the four valve versions.

Not a proper analogy because the Fiero would have to be made by Ferrari.

it all depends on what you want the bike for. if you want it to go real fast and do wheelies and all that then this definitely isnt the bike for you. but it is a good bike if you want to just cruise around and have a nice bike that isnt the norm. dont think that it is totally gutless though, it has decent enough power. plus there are a million parts you can buy to constomize a monster to look how you want. i say as long as it is mechanically ok and the service records are right as well as the price get it.
by the way, what year is it. the newer monsters i believe were available with a slipper clutch. just a nice lil piece if its on there.
