Default 88>90 CRX Dash/ Inst Panel Swap Question

Hey guys,

I swapped a dash from an 88 CRX to my 90 CRX, both Si's. I kept the wires attached to the 88 dash and used these, as well as the instrument panels. I figured this would help minimize problems incase there were differences. The problem I'm having is when I start the car, I have no tach. I have the two plugs in the back of the instrument panel as well as the speedometer cable.
The 88 looks like this...

and the 90 looks like this...

Notice the box looking thing in the middle of the 90? It has a plug as well but I'm not sure what it does. The harness I have with the 88 is for the 88, so there shouldn't be a problem, right?
I'm also getting a code 3, which is Map Sensor I think. Could this be related?

Anyone have any ideas?

This link should help you out. It did when I put an 88 crx si dash into my 91 civic std.
It will give you what wires are what. You will have to rewire the cluster for it to work properly.

Thanks for the reply. I wouldn't think I would need to rewire anything thought because I transferred the wiring from the other dash.
Do I need to keep the 90 dash wiring to go with my 90 wiring harness?

Ah jeeze what a headache...

Thanks for the bump,...i guess.

Should I convert back to the 90 wiring and re-pin the 88 harness? WHat if I keep the 88 dashboard wiring and 88 intrument panel???? Need help.

another free bump. to get my posts up, so I can enter the for sale forum. LOL

A little bit about that blue plug though. There are about 4 different gauge clusters for 88-91 crx and civics. Trust me, I bought 4 of them off ebay before I found what I wanted.

I accidentially bought a 88-89 one with the blue plug, but it wasn't the right size, because I had a 91 cluster housing, from my 91 crx dx car. I then screwed up by getting a 91 that didn't have the blue plug.

I am now rolling with a 90 that has the blue plug, and the green plug for the automatic transmission, (Mine is a manual).

Make sure what year you're buying, and what year you have, make sure you do or don't have the blue plug, and then hope to hell that it works.

to honda for not making 2 clusters from 88-91. One for automatics, one for manuals. BAH!!

About the tach thing. first of all make sure that your dash harness has a tach signal, its probably blue, (check the manual for that year harness you used). Then if you're getting a signal, find out what pin on the gauge cluster is suppose to get that signal, and then make a temporary jumper wire. Then fire the car up.

You can re-pin all of your plugs, but that's lots of work and its just easier to get the right cluster for the dash wiring you're using.

Good luck.

I have each cluster already...and all the wiring for each.

I have the 88 dashboard wiring hooked up to the 88 guage cluster in my 90. Seems like it should all work, but it sure isn't.

are there any extra wires from the 90 or the 88 that aren't being used?

Yes. At least 1 or two extras on the 88 and missing one on the 90. The 88 has an extra one on the actual wiring harness near the key hole that is fore the hazards. On the 90, this would route up to the intrument panel cover.
Also, I just realized I didn't have the ground that goes into the steering column down all the way. Could this cause something?

Oh yeah!

My buddies DSM needed to have power and ground sent to the cluster, otherwise nothing would work on his. This might also be the same for yours. But I don't know. Test it out. Do all the other things work on there? high beams, turn signals, illumination, hazards?

your gonna have to rewire some ****. check out that link that i posted. it shows what wire is what for each cluster and go from there. it is a bitch to do. usually working on cars and beer go together but wiring a cluster even buzzing is not good when using a soldering iron.
