d16 in ef
hey im trying to throw a d16 in a ef and this is my first honda build up and can anybody tell me how much it is going to cost or all the stuff i need to do?
If you can be a little more specific that would probably get a few more responses.
What d16 are you trying to put in your ef.....d16a6 105-108hp(88-91 si engine) d16z6 125hp(92-95 si engine) d16y8 129hp(96-00 si engine).
Well if it is your first buildup go with the d16a6 as it will be the easiest to install assuming that you have a dx or cx. If you havent already done so a MPFI swap is needed..but you can do the wiring for that when your old engine is out of the car.
d16a6 are a pretty good little engine and the best plan for you would be to, (in addition to getting all of the necessary parts like new bearings, seals, and other gaskets, timing belt, and all that,) a slightly more aggresive that stock a6 camshaft and stiffer valve springs. ALso the next thing would be different pistons that will give you a higher compression ratio unless you are going turbo. I have heard 88-89 integra 1.6 work nice but youll have to do a bit of searching for the correct compression numbers to expect.
As far as the cam there are a few options but I do recommend speaking to a lot of qualified people before you buy your parts as domed or different pistons combined with a higher lift cam can cause some nasty piston/valve interference.
So ya youde get the cam, adjustable cam gear, different pistons for better compression ratio, get your head port and polished, and there are many choices for the intake manifold. People are saying that the skunk 2 one gives very poor clearance from the back of the intake to the firewall. But alternatives are the y8 intake from the d16y8 and a selection of a few aftermarket ones.
As far as your block and head machining a fairly good machine shop will tell you whats going on as your head or block areas might or might not need machining.
When you get as far as this step to get your header and intake. Also tell us what you want this engine for....low-midrange power or high rpm. For best high rpm youll want a short ram intake and a 4-1 type header. For mid range a longer tube intake will be best such as a cold air intake which will keep the flow going for lower rpm response. And he header would be a 4-2-1 type for that type of lower mid range power.

alright cool man i think i wanna go with a d16y8 what kinda tranny is that a hydro? what all would i have to do for the swap. im also thinking of turboing. i appreciate the help man.
no prob man....the d16y8 is a good choice but you will have to convert to obd-1 so you can use a p28 ecu(d16z6 ecu...) as it will run everything the smoothest and you will be able to tune the ecu easily which is a plus because your thinking going turbo. But yeah that tranny like all of the honda ones i believe after and including 1994 are hyrdo...but you can still use a d series tranny of your choice that is a cable tranny( d16a6 si tranny would be the best) and im 99% sure it will bolt up to your d16y8 without problems.
ok sounds good. im just trying to build a nice street car to smash on some friends with. have you heard of anyone using a jdm d15 i heard those where pretty good. and also do you know any web sites that have good prices for the motor and parts??
ya im sort of in the same boat as this is my winter car but its already killing peoples summer cars so thats pretty funny. I honestly have never bought engines or engine parts online yet. As far as the jdm d15's im not too familiar with them but if you can find a solid place to get jdm parts incase something happens then go for that, however i would just stick to easily attainable parts like usdm *****. ITs your call...goodluck
