URGENT HELP! exhaust/engine problem
I was drivin back to LA from San Diego when I stopped by a shell to fill up. I got their premium grade, and proceeded to merge back onto the highway to continue on my journey.
As I was merging, it felt kinda sluggish and the car started to make this dual tone exaust sound like it had a hole in it or something. i have an aftermarket exhaust so it is a bit louder than stock...but now it sounds like I have 2 of them with slightly different tones...until about 5000 RPM+ where it sounds almost normal. When I'm idling at a red light, the RPMs can drop to about 500 momentarily before goin back up to around 900 (like normal). It feels like I've lost torque and the sound is really loud and obnoxious. There is also a slight rattling/tinking sound from under the hood
Could it be a hole in my muffler that just happened all of a sudden to cause the sound? or is something wrong with the engine, or gas?
Does anyone know what the problem is?
thanx

first off are you sure that u put in premium gas? and do u have a header. you may want to check the bolts on the manifold where it goes from 4 - 2 make sure everything is tight
yes, i am positive i put premium gas
no, i do not have aftermarket header
from what i can see, there is no hole in my muffler. do they just 'appear' all of a sudden? it was running just fine b4 the fillup, and about 30 sec right after it was messed up.
would a hole in the muffler cause a dual tone grumble with dipping revs?
my car sounds like a dying diesel truck now...

it's not the first time i've used premium.
and if it's something they put in i doubt i'd be the only one having problems because of the gas

no black smoke comes out when i went behind to check it. the majority of the noise seems to be from the exhaust (and vibration) but the engine has some slight tinking noise because of this. the 'dual tone exhaust' sound doesnt really get unnaturally louder when i rev higher. It actually seems to stop when i hit 5000+
im gonna take it to acura to fix but i just wanna make sure its not some major engine problem that sucks my bank dry...
it would be a freak accident if it was bad gas i think...it's NEVER happened in my life, nor have i heard anything about this being a gas problem...

Ok first its not my truck. and just because u fill up with shell doent mean that the gas he filled up on wasnt ****.
And second don’t you think that its weird that after he fills up with gas it starts to run like ****?
Ill tell you some of the symptoms that I encounter when I get bad gas.
My RPM will go from 750(normal)-200
I get a bad smell of gas in the truck
It runs like **** I feel like there is no power
Just trying to give him ideas no need to be a smart *** about it.
Try to run the tank of gas and fill up somewhere else.
If it fixes the problem
if it doest im sorry and I wish that I could have been more help.

Are you sure your idle is @ 900 rpms @ rest? I also have a 95 GSR (DB8) and mines idles @ 700~750 rpms @ rest. You may wnat to check your idle.
I also use Shell premium and I've never had any issues with it...
Peace,
TQ

well i never actually counted the ticks ...when i said 900 i just meant that the needle always idles less than 1000.
idling was never a problem, it just started going weird after i filled up. is it possible that i got poor gas from a station almost in the middle of nowhere (right between LA and SD)?

Yup, could be. Keep the rpms down untill you hit about a half a tank, then hit up your local Shell and fill it up. Do that for a couple of tank fulls and you'll be all right.
If it's just bad gas, and keep your eye on your idle, normal @ rest is 700~750 rpms. Don't have to count ticks, just look at your rpms on the left of your speedometer when your in neutral...
