GS-r rebuild question.
I have a GS-R block right now tht i bought off someone who said it had like 40k on it. however he told me i should get the rings replaced and have the cylinder walls honed or boreed or something.
what do you guys recommend. i was just gonna buy a head and slap it on there. what kinda prep work should i do to make the motor run well for a good 100k miles?
pretty much same questions on the head. anything i need to know before slapping everything together. or will just slapping everything together be just fine?
another thing i'm wondering is that the motor's missing the timing belt drive pulley. basicly the the timeing belt teeth thingy down on the crankshaft. i'll try to post a picture but that pretty much sums it up. anyone know where i can get one?

are you talking about the cam gear is missing? You definately need to read around on the forums and get an idea of whats involved it to "slapping everything together". If you want to play it safe and have the motor run for a long time, you'll need to replace gaskets, seals, bearings (recommended), block honed, new piston rings, new water pump/oil pump, timing belt, etc etc etc. List can go on...it just reallly depends on how much money and work you want to put into this.

X2 for new piston rings, main and rod bearings, hone (if sleeves aren't scratched), new water pump and oil pump, head gasket, timing belt, and if you are getting a head thats off a different block, have the short block and head resurfaced. you'll find that with all this rebuilt you might as well get some high compression (if all motor) or low compression (if turbo, supercharge, nitrous) pistons and maybe some new rods. like everyone tends to say, if you have the motor apart, might as well put it back together the right way or you'll pay later..

cam gear? wtf i said down at the crackshaft. the cam gear is on the CAMshaft. anyways thanks for the info. basicly just do a complete rebuild. i culda figured that out i was wondering if i HAD to. so if i didn resurface it or rebuild it how long would it last?

u just might be highly disappointed when u go to start it without rebuilding it. If hes telling u it needs new rings that means it was probably blowing smoke and compression was jacked in 1 or more cylinder which leads to perfomance loss and durability. Also if the rings need to be replaced then the cylinder walls a probably some what warpped.
Something tells me if the seller is telling you to redo the rings, theres something wrong (burning oil, bad compression etc) and it has way more then 40k
rebuild it ground up (new bearings, seals, gaskets, rings etc etc). You'll have yourself a new motor
You could just 'slap it together'... but if it runs poorly (ex. bad compression) you'll be doing a rebuild anyway.
