I know a few people have converted the ugly tails on their R1s to the sexier, 02/03 style.

What did you need to do/buy in order to get this done?

There's an R1 FS cheap locally, was considering buying it. But I hate the rear end.

The R1 in question is a '99, I just found out. That's pretty freakin' old. I'm gonna try to get them down to under $4k.

Factor out the winter and I had it just about right.

Maybe you should keep a bike (in one piece) for 12 months before going R1.

No 'Busas. Not yet, anyway.

I really want a '03 600RR in yellow. I'd rather have a 600 than a litrebike, all things being equal. But for some reason everyone locally is adding $1000 to the price of their 600s. The R1 is at a dealer that has been really good to me in the past, so I'm gonna take a closer look @ it and see what they'll let it go for.
