fixing rust...already grinded down. need help with painting...
I just picked up a 95 teg with the typical surface rust above the rear wheel. I already sanded/grinded it down to bare metal, filled it in and im going to sand and painted it tomorrow.
The spot is only about 2" long by 1" high, so im hoping i can use some of the touch up paint to fix it. Only problem is its applied using a brush and i dont want it to come out looking TOO bad (anything is better then the rust though).
so after i primer it then use the touch up paint, what are my next steps to blend it into the existing paint?
after it dries should i wet sand it with some high (ie. ~2000) grit sand paper then try to buff the area? what about rubbing compoud to make the area more smooth?
any help would be appreciate. thanx

I got rust in the same spot on my 92 hatchy, the only problem is that mine has eaten all the way through the metal. now i need to weld some new quarter panels in.
You are smart to fix it early befor it gets to bad

you need to do more than just sand the rust off, like a thing called rustmort (sp?) or cut the rusted section out and weld in a new piece. sanding and filling will only fix it temporarily. So, after you fix it this time, you're going to be going through the same thing later. What primer are you using. Unless you REALLY know what you're doing, I wouldnt touch anything in a spray can. You use 2000 grit to wetsand clear coat before buffing and polishing. rubbing compound isnt what makes the area smooth, it's the sanding. I would try to help more, but dinners ready and Im forgetting more and more about bodywork since I dont have classes anymore. Goodluck.
do body shops normally do this for rust sposts. The rust in the same place has gone all the way through but im wondering where i would take it to get it fixed right. Im thinking it might be expensive for them to do this.

i dont see the point of cutting and welding in a new piece when it was only surface rust and there is plenty of good metal. I grinded it all down past the rust, past the pitting, ect.
its a really small spot that you can actually see, so if i mess it up its not a big deal. I just wanted to give it a shot myself before i spent the money taking it somewhere.
ive got some auto primer/rust sealer in a can that i planned on using. my plans are to tape of the area...lightly spray primer..sand...repeat till its smooth with the surrounding paint...then paint it with the touch-up..wet-sand or use some rubbing compound, then see how it looks

if its all the way through your only option is to get all the rust cut out, then a new piece of metal welded in its place. pretty $$$$

sand the primer, then paint. When u paint it dont mask real close(it will leave a hard edge). Then wet sand w/1500, & buff. JUST THE OVERSPARY (where u try to blend it). U dont have to sand/buff where u jus painted.
