How bad would the falken ziex 512's be in the snow? Im guessing there more geared towards being a warmer street tire but they are still an all season. Not major snow at all. Just like 1 - 2 inches occasionally. Would they be able to handle that? Im looking for the cheapest tire possible to be able to handle the cold weather and some minimal snow ( i have seperate summer tires and rims) and the falkens are $60 each. Im dead broke thats why i am looking for something cheap.

That's what all-season tires are for. They should be good enough for your needs. But for the same price, you can get the Kumho Ecsta ASX, which is a lot better all-season tire. Much better tire for the same money makes it a no-brainer...

 

i drove on my old wheels regas/ziex 512 (205/50/15) in the snow/ice storm about 2-3 months ago here in MD/DC/VA. they held up pretty damn good, i was very impressed.

the snow/ice was about 4-5"...and as usual i probably drove 10mph slower than speed limit everywhere just to be on the safer side.

i recently changed to 195/55/15 es100's....and i must say, they suck in the snow/slush. even the tiniest amount of slush/ice/snow on the road. good thing its just rain now here in MD.

i rate then 8.5/10 in that harsh *** storm i drove thru for about 3 hrs.

 

ECAhatch thanks for the input. I am going to get the kumho ASX that nsxtasy recomended considering theyll be better in the snow and cold weather.

 

Isn't it a little late to be worrying about snow?

If you have summer tires/rims. Look in the local newspaper classifieds for used winter tires. Make sure they have tons of tread left, maybe only used only one season. Seeing as you are cash strapped you can get killer deals. Again though, a little late in the season to be looking for it.

Better yet, just take the bus (if you can) on the odd time that it's bad out if you are worried and don't have too much cash.

I've recently had to drive EP3 CTR equipped with both Falken Ziex 512's and Pirelli P Zero Nero M&S in the same size.

Although the Pirelli is a more expensive and much preferred tyre for most people, I have to say that I preferred the Falken Ziex 512 in icy weather.

I think the Ziex 512 are a very nice buy, and they also perform much better in the dry than you might expect out of such a cheap tyre.

The Ziex 512 do seem to gradually feather as they wear, and they will get very noisy. You'll have to decide whether this is an acceptable trade for the low purchase price of the Ziex.

I have never driven the Kumho ASX that nsxtasy talked about. We would both have experience with the Pirelli P Zero Nero, though, and perhaps he could extrapolate for us whether or not he thinks the Kumho ASX is better than those. If he says the Kumho ASX is not as good as the Pirelli P Zero Nero then I think that would make the Ziex 512 the hands down favourite for general purposes.

Well, I think the Ziex 512 is a worse choice than either of the other tires. Worse performance for the same price. But to answer your first question...

I'm not sure whether you're referring to the Pirelli PZero Nero summer tire, or the Pirelli PZero Nero M+S all-season tire.

The summer tire is an excellent performing summer tire, but this topic isn't about summer tires.

The PZero Nero M+S all-season tire is very similar in performance to the Kumho Ecsta ASX all-season tire, and both are better than the Ziex ZE-512. In some sizes, the prices of all three tires are almost identical; in other sizes, the Kumho and Falken are significantly less expensive than the Pirelli. So the Kumho consistently gives you better performance for the same price as the Falken, and similar performance for the same price as, or sometimes better than, the Pirelli.
