Default clutch making noises and wont go into gear

k when I try to drive the car I can not put it into gear at all, I have to shut the car off, throw it into gear, and then start it up to get going everytime I come to a stop. arggh. I took it into the tranny shop to get it checked out, they took it for a drive (made it like 10 ft) then looked around and told me it was the master and slave cylinder needed to be replaced. I asked them for a price and they said it would be $550 to get the parts in and all fixed. I told them uhh no thanks and left.

also everytime I step on the clutch it makes a grinding noise and the car dies out. my buddy says that the grinding is coming from a bearing?

I bled the slave cylinder last night and that didn't change anything. I'm gonna try to bench bleed the master today and see how that goes. as far as I know there are no leaks in the slave but I'm not quite sure about the master.

HELP

Could be the master or slave not releasing enough. You can find them used and install yourself, try one then the other.

Remove the rubber boot by the slave cylinder and remove the slave cylinder plunger. You can then peek through the hole. I'm not sure what you can see through the hole since I haven't had the need yet but I know you can at least see the fork and possible the throwout bearing.

If that doesn't work, you'll have to take out the tranny.

I would check your master cylinder for leaks before I do anything else. How is the play in the clutch pedal? Is it hard to push it? Give us more details.

before I bled the slave, the clutch got very loose sometimes and would completly be useless. Almost felt like it wasn't there when I pushed it in and it would immediatly bog the car and stall it. after bleeding the clutch, it went back to normal, kinda stiff but that's how it was when I got the car. I've checked the master cylinder for leaks and I'm almost positive there are no leaks. Should I replace it anyways?

I took the car for a little drive today. The clutch feels very stiff and once in a while it sticks to the floor when I push it in. and when I tap the clutch it kicks back as if what the abs brakes would do. gears are still tough to get in, I had to throw my 4 ways on a couple times. arrrgh
