help- tranny's making odd noise while downreving in gear.
its an 00 ap1. with about 16xxx miles. i bought around 14xxx miles around 2 months ago...
[my dumbass only drove it top down and the noise isnt so noticible in that moment (what with the wind rushing through my hair and all.
)...]
basically, whenever im in gear and im comming down around 4 or 5k all the way to about 2.5 to 3k, i hear a noise that could best be described as a buzz.
with windows and top up, its a lowd f*ckin buzz. i cant decide if its comming from inside the casing itself but from what ive gotten while troubleshooting thats what it seems like....
could be an alternate vibration but i couldnt imagine what.
its too steady to be a heatshield and its not so much vibration or rattling as it is a steady.... well, buzz. excuse my vocabulary.
i know this isnt much to go on but i dont know what else to do. it drives great except for an occasional 2nd gear grind. and the fact that its hesitant to get into gear when reaaaaallly quickshifting. but it feels fairly good. but then again how much damage could have been caused in 16000 miles!!!!!!!!!!! if it helps at all im assuming the noise was there before i took posession because i noticed it the day after purchasing it.
ive flushed and replaced the tranny fluid and nothing.
ANY ideas?
thanks in advance fellas

I have a 00 AP1 w/ 63xxx miles on it. Mine does the same thing. Sounds like it is coming from the drive shaft almost. Mine has done it since I got the car 3months ago. I never really payed attention to it until my friend (who is a very well respected tech) said it sounds like the input shaft bearing is going bad. It is not really effecting anything right now, so I am just monitoring it. .....If you find out it is something else...post up please..
Clutch buzz. Now you can sleep, its harmless. Old springs on your clutch disk shakes around when you decelerate.
if its only at a specific RPM, generally from about 3.5-4k. and it should happen on rev up and down...
then more then likely its "Clutch Buzz" you can search all over and find out about it. Basically its harmless, just annoying to hear.
there is a TSB out about it with stock clutches, most people just live with it, its common.
if its only on down rev or at a wider RPM range then there are NUMEROUS other things it could be. Everything from timing chain not being the right tension... heat shield rattle... its even common for an oil cap to come off and lodge itself on the topside of the tranny case.

****... okay well i dont wanna live with it! is it free to replace if theres a tsb out?
its rediculously annoying. and yeah its only on the decelerate and not only is it only on the decelerate, but when you push the gas a quarter of a millimeter, it goes away. as long as you barely touch the gas, its gone. .... so do we all agree that thats what it is???

Yeah, it should just be ONLY while coasting in gear or decelerating. That's the clutch buzz. I don't know what that other guy is talking about. Annoying and makes the car sound ghetto, but doesn't bother me.
yeah but this should also be why i have trouble getting into gear when quickshifting real fast. my buddy had this problem and on a different car and it made it real hard to get into gear. im hoping fixing it will fix all my problems.
Should try bleeding your clutch too. HT member "congo" had the same problem, hard to shift into 1st, reverse, and between gears. His clutch fluid reservoir was almost empty... refilled, bled, perfect.

He's correct. Mine did this as well, as well as many others ive seen.
I recently put a new oem clutch in and the problem went away.
I tried to get honda to fix it under warranty and they wont do it because they claim its a "wearable part"

Mine sounds exactly like the Clutch Buzz TSB you were talkin about.......
Except my clutch was replaced 3 months before Bought it. It was replaced with an ACT FF/HD..... Maybe mine is the aftermarket clutch?

so the only way to fix this is to get an unsprung clutch? yeah id rather have driveability lol
well im going to call honda tomorrow and see what i can do.. ill keep yall updated cause if its a tsb then it should be taken care of. regardless of wearability or not... from what ive gathered on recalls at least.

They're probably going to tell you its normal. If they replace it.. I'd be scared actually.
They might not put it back the right way.

aight i decided to go drive a friend of mines s2000 (first time ive driven another (he has an 02ap1) holy **** mine SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i thought the notchiness was just normal... his goes in like butter! everytime im actually in gear, its notchy as all hell. if i have the foot on the clutch at a light, the stick slides in as easily as ever, but as soon as i go. oh god.... also when i downshift and i attempt to put it into second i really have to pull on the stick.... i overlooked a lot. i dont know if its synchros or what, but everytime i shift theres a THUNK or klink or a klank or a click. his is as smooth as a ****** dc5 tranny. i thought mine was normal... i really dont have money for this...

Hi Noah
An unsprung clutch is not the only way to fix it...yes this is a technical service bulletin, the clutch springs are defective. If your car is still under warranty, which I doubt because it's a 2001, then yes they will replace it with a new clutch disk free of charge.
My car has clutch "chatter" as it's refferred to in the TSB. I talked to the Honda dealer about it, they won't do anything if you're out of warranty because there is nothing "wrong" with the car...it's just annoying. There is nothing to worry about in not replacing it.
My fix was a Spoon exhaust, I can't hear much of anything inside the car now

Try switching to GM Synchromesh FM, or Royal Purple Synchromax.

No doubt, I have an 01 and mine makes the same noise, no big deal. But I did switch the fluid to royal purple syncromax and it's like butter. After the tranny warms up of course. Don't sweat the small stuff. Just turn up the radio or put the top down. hahahaha
