Default Clutch chatter due to motor mounts or new clutch?

I know it's a little strange to be asking about the reasons for clutch chatter 600 miles after installing a new clutch, but this feels a little different... softer or something. When I engage quickly there is no chatter at all, but backing out of the garage, etc. it can get pretty bad.

While replacing my clutch, TO bearing, etc. I noticed my tranny side mount is completely shot. The other mounts appear to be OK on visual inspection though.

Obviously, the clutch itself (carbon/kevlar full disc, not pucked) is the first suspect. But I was wondering about potential issues due to the tranny mount itself. On a search, I found that most people have had problems like poor shifting if one of the "torque" mounts is shot, but does anyone have experience with what happens when the tranny side mount needs replacing?

Thanks!

Did you get the flywheel resurfaced?

This will happen when you don't take the glaze off. I hope you didn't make my mistake.

Also your pressure plate might be applying un-equal pressure to the disc. Bad manufacturing... it happens.

And sorry no exp with mounts If it looks bad then it is bad. repl it.

Uh oh. No I didn't. The flywheel looked great. No hot spots, grooves, or anything, so I didn't bother. The clutch replacement was due to a failed clutch disc, so I took the opportunity go upgrade to a stronger pressure plate as well.

Is it likely that my disc will just take longer to break in? I've been going through the proper break in procedures for at least 500 miles. If anything, the chattering issue is getting worse. I thought it might be due to the more aggressive disc finally breaking in.

I don't know what the characteristics are of a carbon/kevlar disc vs. organic... If there simply is more chatter, I don't mind so much as long as it isn't related to a problem.

Thanks for the reply!

Sounds normal... one of the reasons I chose a organic clutch. Quote from exedy's website:

"With any cerametallic clutch system, there will be some compromise of start up driveability as compared to a stock clutch (chatter on light throttle, low rpm start up). This characteristic is generally felt to be acceptable in modified performance cars. Drivers of cerametallic clutches on the street should be warned not to "ride the clutch" to try to reduce the chatter as this will greatly increase the wear."

about teh bad manufacturing . it hapens more when u dont install it correctly or torque it down unevenly . also a in my opinion its difficult to diagnos a clutch tranny problem without knowing any other simptoms . becus bad mounts can couse chatter . also pressure plate TO bearing ect.. ect

but i dont know if not resurfacing your FW will cause chatter i been fine W/O doing that

Well, that's good to know because the only thing I know for sure is that my tranny side mount is completely shot. All the little rubber connections in the bushing have broken, so it's basically just sitting in there. Not sure what kind of shape my other mounts are in, but probably not great if this one is so bad. I guess I'll try some poly inserts and see if things get a little better.

I sort of expected some additional chatter since the clutch is "more aggressive", but what got me about this one was that it felt different from other high performance clutches I've driven. Almost loose or something. Now that I see what I'm typing, I'm thinking it really is the mounts...

Thanks guys.

I had my clutch in my 06 sedan replaced about 11k miles ago, in went an Exedy clutch im told is a step up from stock one. Had same kind of problem, can't shift smoothly etc. but also recently had to replace tranny mount. If its your tranny mount, you will feel a clunk when letting out your clutch. If it's your front passenger mount you will feel lots of cabin vibration.

Had my tranny mount replaced. I was getting a sort of "clunk" when I let out the clutch and would feel the engine bucking.
