Default Are brake retaining clips necessary?

It sounds stupid but I figure I'd ask. I was doing my brake job today on my 88 Civic. Well I go to put the new pads in and they won't go in at all. So I decide to remove a retaining clip and see if that helps. They slide in just enough.

Well then I set them in all the way back and then they become loose.

Will my brake pads be alright with out the retaining clip or shoudl I hurry up and get some on there?

The clips are used to dab a little bit of grease or brake lube on then to let the pads move freely.

are you talking about the ones that go on the calipers that keep the ends of the pads snug?

it wont really matter actually.

youll just get annoying clink noise as the pad shifts whenever you brake in reverse and go forward again.

That must be why my breaks are always clanking when I ease my foot off

yeah, i threw the clips away when i was racing. it makes changing pads much easier. but when i started driving the same car normally again, the noise was just too annoying to bear so i found some extra and put them back on. its just from the pads shifting within the caliper.

I noticed the pad nearest the caliper piston almost hangs out when its all the way pushed in. Kinda scary. I think I'll source out some retainers, just to be safe.

I appreciate the help.

I drove the car around but something else is messing with it now
