Another newbie motorcycle guy here.
I'm taking my MSF class next month and after I complete that, I'm going to be bike shopping. My budget is $4,000.
Here are some of the 600cc bikes I've been looking at in the cycle trader:
CBR, GSXR, YZF, Ninja, Katana, and ZFR.
I'm 20 years old and have only ever received 1 ticket (which was BS, BTW! The cop was low on his quota I'm guessing...). How badly will insurance kill me on those bikes? I'd really like to get a CBR. They look awesome and I assume that they are very reliable as most things built by Honda are...
From what I've read, it seems that the ZFR and Katana would be a bit more tame than the rest that I listed. Would that yeild an insurance break?
I'd really like to get the CBR, but I think I'd still be really happy with either of the Yammy's or the Can'a'tuna
Hell, I'd be happy to have any of them!

What is the difference between F2 F3 & F4?
As the designation goes on the power goes up at the top end, but the bottom end reduces. Also there were a number of suspension and and rim width revisions as the model went on. But if you are learning i would steer clear until you have a few miles under your belt.
Have a look at a 250 that you can fall off a few times and get used to it all. I am not kidding and although you may think i am being a kill-joy i;m trying to help!

kawasaki 250/500, look like the 80's style ninja's like tom cruise drove in top gun
Aprilla rs 50/125/250 A guy I know has the 50cc, cost like 4 grand new and top speed is 65mph.
If i were you I would try to avoid something with plastics, as plastics can get very expensive to replace if you crash. To purchase a complete set of plastics for a yamaha r1/r6, cbr929/954/f4i/rc51, suzuki gsxr600/750/1000 is gonna be
2-4+ grand from the dealer.
Look into the suzuki gs, suzuki sv650/sv650s, kawasaki naked bikes (ones that arent coved in plastics) Ride it, wreck it, learn and then buy a ninja/gsxr/cbr

You can get a NSR250 (probably one of the fastest 250cc motorcycles excuding the Aprillia RS250) for a decent price. hehehe
but that would be a too fast, dangerous motorcycle to start out with (in my opinion) due to the fact that its a two-stroke (simple terms, it revs like a vtec, when it goes in to the powerband around 7000rpm, it flies)
other choices of 250cc with plastics would be mostly grey bikes, NSR250, TZR250, RGV, CBR250, FZR, etc etc etc

an example of a RS250
That is a VERY fast bike, but not a good one to start out with
Motorcycles like NSR50, NSR80, YSR50, YSR80, KSR-1, KSR-2 (yay, i have imported one to Canada), TZR50, TZM50, RS50 is a VERY GOOD choice, i think for a beginner. More than enough power, goes about 140km/h, good in tracks as well.
About plastics, you can get FRP parts for cheap prices.
