Default tire dimensions for 17"

What is a good tire dimension for 17" wheels that is not pencil-thin and provides substantial cushioning as opposed to a weak, penci-thin look?

I have a lowered 97 4dr LX and plan to fit it with 17" wheels. I know that most wheel and tire bundles come with thin 205/40/17 dimensions. Awhile ago I compared my stock 15" wheels to a 17" wrapped in 205/40/17's and the overall height was the same. Input greatly appreciated!

Click the optional 17" wheel size on this page.

This site will let you adjust and compare sizes. The important things are to maintain the overall tire height, and not go too wide.
