Default About to acquire VX wheels

Im about to get some VX wheels for an insane deal, they are 13x5 and wiegh only 9.7lbs They are spray painted black so I was going to strip them down and get them powder coated black. I was planning on having these ready for use as a nice summer wheel. I was looking for nice street tires and could not find a damn thing. I want the best proformance tire with the max width, and stock hieght. What kind of tires should I look into.

Read this thread, basically covers what you asked.

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1461843

But you really don't have too much to choose from in 13" performance tire. Thus the reason you "could not find a damn thing"

If you really want help please answer the following questions and we will do our best for you!

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by me and my 6 golden questions &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">
1) what is the make/model/year/package of car you have and are there any mods.
2) what is your budget
3) what size rims do you have (include offset if you have it)
4) what is the climate that these tires will see? If you live in a snowy area do you have dedicated winter tires
5) what is the purpose of this car? Drag strip? Auto-X? Getting groceries? Daily driver with weekend play?
6) what is your budget and what is more important long life or stickyness?
</TD></TR></TABLE>

Cheers!
(I realize you answer one or two of these already)

I dont really do any autocross or anything like that. This would be more for street traction/drag racing/last somewhat long.

Are you sure 13" will clear your brakes? Your car came with 185/60-14 stock.

Tires that are close are:
175/70-13 (-0.4%)
185/65-13 (-1.2%)
195/65-13 (+1.1%)
205/60-13 (-0.2%) - Don't know if these are good for 5" rims.

Sumitomo HTR 200s. (Available at tire rack) These are not known to be good summer tires by any stretch of the imagination (but like I said there is not a lot of 13"s around anymore). (I actually rock these in the summer, they are damn cheap $$.)

Maybe NSXTASY will have better suggestions once he comes online tomorrow.

Cheers.

I was thinking those may be alright for what Im looking for. Would they give me decent traction at the drag strip? I should have a traction bar/ camber kit/good alignment by the time I have the wheels done. Im looking to get atleast 2.2 60s I can only get 2.4s right now.

Man what a bummer, 9.7 lb wheels that look stock, but no decent tires for them. Arg. I might just go with the HTR 200's, hopefully someone will chime in with some nice news.

There are some track tires out there but I don't think that is a good idea for street use. Ya, don't worry, somone will chime in probably tomorrow.

In all fairness the Sumis pale in comparison only when compared to the best street tires out there. There are not bad and I personally have not had any problems with them.

So anyways, Unless you get dedicated slicks for the track or R compound tires the only summer tires out there are the HTR 200. You have 13X5 rims so 175/70R13 is the only one that is approved for that width of rim. 185/60R13 will also fit but it would be considerably undersized, about 4.4% (1" in diameter).

The R compound tire that will work for you Yokohama A032R, 175/60/13. However it is very very undersized (about 6.5% or 1.5") so you might have some ground clearnance issuse. It is also only really meant for racing as, I understand it, it will require to be warm to work well, it will wear out very quickly and I think it is a little less predictable. (I know nothing about racing tires). I do not recommend this tire at all but you should know that it exists.

The plus side is that the HTRs are only 35/piece at Tire Rack .

Those are the only summer performance tires out there in that size. All seasons you have a bit more choice.

You can't have both.

You can get the Sumitomo HTR 200 summer tire, or one of the various all-season tires, for "last somewhat long", but they won't grip all that well. Or you can get R compound tires like the Yokohama A032R for "street traction / drag racing".

If you care about performance, then consider getting larger wheels (15" or larger), for which you will find a large selection of tires that can last reasonably long and give you reasonable traction.

Okay, then how bad would the HTR 200's be for drag?

Worse than most other summer tires. But good enough to have fun with. Try them and see.

I just picked up some VX wheels tonight for a good deal as well and I will probably go with the Sumitomo's as a 'cheap' tire that I can use at road course events this summer. I saw that the Sumitomo's are available in a 195/60-13 & 205/60-13. Would the 205's fit this wheel w/out bulging out too much or would the 195's be the widest you could go with it? I checked the wheel calculator on miatanet & the 205's kept all of the specs pretty much the same as compared to the stock 185/60-14 on my 91' crx.

For a '91 CRX, the best 13" size is 175/70-13.

The VX wheels are 13x5. The minimum approved rim width for 195/60-13 and 205/60-13 is 5.5 inches, so they should not be mounted on VX wheels. Stick with the 175/70-13 size.

Dont want to make a new thread, I get get some nice yokoham tires off my friend but they are 185/60/13. How much lower would that make my car? Would it be unusable?

4.4% smaller than 185/60-14(stock), exactly 1" smaller in diameter. Your car would sit 1/2" lower. If your car is not lowered already it shouldn't matter much. It is not unsafe in anyway. Your car will accelerate a bit faster, like having lower gears. Your speedometer will over read by 4% and on the highway you can expect slightly higher RPMs (3120 instead of 3000). Gas milage may be slightly affected because of this.

If you don't care much and the tires are free from a friend I would rock them.

Anymore questions just shoot and
Cheers.

So itll be like having lower gears... will this hurt or improve my 1/4 mile time with a stock B16a?, minus the fact that theyll grip better than what I have now.My car is lowered but I can go over speed bumps and the lowest part is my header which I do hit occasionally. When I get a new one Ill just get one I know will fi tight up on the oil pan.

It will improve it unless it forces you to do an extra upshift before the end, in which case it will hurt it.

The A048 does not come in 13". However the A032R does. This is a R compund tire and might not be best suited for the road use.

The A048 is also an R compound track tire. It has the usual disadvantages of track tires for street use: extremely rapid treadwear (you'd be lucky to get 5K miles out of them), lack of warning before losing grip, need to be warmed up to be effective, mediocre traction on wet surfaces. Very nice tire for racetrack use.
